Chapter 5 - The Shredded Paper Trail

I walked straight into the home office while Brandon and Gertrude stood paralyzed in the entryway, screaming incoherently at the security guards.

The office was a disaster. Papers were strewn across my mahogany desk—printed bank statements, loan modification applications, and tax forms bearing forged signatures. In their rush to finalize the fraudulent HELOC before the weekend, they hadn't even bothered to clean up their mess.

I opened the bottom drawer of my desk. My passport, my birth certificate, and Skylar’s legal documents—which I had hidden weeks ago inside a hollowed-out dictionary—were safe.

Behind me, the office door banged open. Brandon stormed in, his chest heaving, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep and sheer, unadulterated panic.

“Char... listen to me,” Brandon’s voice dropped from furious shouting into a desperate, pathetic whine. He reached out, trying to grab my arm. “You’re blowing this completely out of proportion. Mom and Hailey... they were just stressed. Hailey needed help with her startup capital, and Mom wanted to secure her retirement fund! It was just a temporary arrangement. We were going to pay it back!”

I jerked my arm away as if his skin were burning hot.

“With whose money, Brandon?” I asked quietly, turning to face him. “With my salary? With the salary from the job you insisted I work eighty hours a week at so you could sit around playing investor with your mother?”

“I’m your husband!” he yelled, the mask slipping completely off to reveal the weak, entitled coward underneath. “Under the law, everything we have is joint property! You can’t just cut us off! The architect is downstairs right now waiting for twenty grand, and the contractor is threatening to put a lien on the house!”

“Then let them put a lien on it,” I said smoothly, sliding my documents into my briefcase. “Because as of ten minutes ago, my attorney filed a motion for emergency annulment of all joint liability regarding the HELOC, citing documented digital forgery and identity theft perpetrated from this exact room.”

Brandon’s jaw went slack. The color completely drained from his face. “Forgery...? What are you talking about? Nobody forged anything!”

“The federal forensic investigators have the IP logs, Brandon,” I said, looking him straight in the eye. “They know Hailey typed the application. They know Gertrude signed off on the distribution. And they know you looked the other way while your family forced our eleven-year-old daughter to eat instant noodles in the dark while you feasted on king crab.”

Before he could answer, a loud commotion echoed from the front hallway.
