Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The sharp sound of heavy footsteps on our hardwood floors preceded a frantic voice calling out: “Mr. Pierce? Mr. Pierce, where is the deposit? My crew has been sitting on site for two hours!”
It was the architect—a middle-aged man in a high-vis vest carrying a heavy leather portfolio, walking right into the middle of the family drama. He stopped dead in the doorway of the home office, blinking at the surreal scene: Brandon looking like a cornered animal, Gertrude shrieking in the hallway, two federal-adjacent security guards standing guard, and me packing my briefcase.
“Uh... is there a problem?” the architect asked, looking nervously around the room. “Mrs. Pierce told me yesterday the twenty-thousand-dollar wire transfer would clear by nine this morning.”
I stepped around Brandon, walking right up to the architect with a calm, professional composure.
“Mr. Miller, I’m Charlotte Pierce,” I said clearly, extending my hand. “I am the sole legal owner and titleholder of this property. I am rescinding any and all architectural contracts, remodeling agreements, and consultation authorizations effective immediately. My signature on your retainer agreement was forged.”
The architect’s eyes went wide. He dropped his hand back to his side, stepping back instinctively. “Forged? Look, Mr. Pierce hired me, he showed me the ID—”
“Mr. Pierce doesn't own this house,” I interrupted coldly. “And my attorneys will be sending your firm a formal cease-and-desist letter along with a subpoena for all communication logs regarding my husband. You’ve been dealing with fraudsters.”
Gertrude shrieked from the hallway, lunging toward the office door like a cornered hawk. “Liar! That man is our guest! You’re ruining our family over a temper tantrum!”
“Your family?” I turned on my mother-in-law with a glare so sharp it made her stumble backward. “You sat at my table, ate my food, spent my money, and forced my daughter to hide in the dark with instant soup while you mocked me behind my back. You aren't my family, Gertrude. You’re a parasite that I’ve finally scraped off my shoe.”
Hailey burst into tears behind her grandmother, wailing dramatically into her smartphone while live-streaming the disaster to her three hundred followers—a move that her defense attorney would undoubtedly scream at her for later, but one I welcomed as public evidence of their complete lack of remorse.

“Get out of my house,” I told them. All of them.
