Chapter 4 - The Ambush in the Kitchen

The black sedan pulled into our driveway on Oakridge Lane just behind my SUV at 9:15 AM.

The house looked deceptively quiet from the outside—a well-manicured lawn, a blooming bougainvillea vine climbing up the porch pillars, and Brandon’s luxury sedan parked in the driveway. But the moment I stepped out of the car, followed by two towering men in dark suits from Marcus’s firm, the illusion of domestic tranquility shattered.

The front door flew open before my key even touched the deadbolt.

Brandon stood in the doorway, his face purple with rage, his hair unbrushed, wearing a rumpled bathrobe. Behind him hovered Gertrude, her hands clutching a string of pearls around her neck, and Hailey holding her phone out like a weapon, recording.

“Are you out of your absolute mind, Charlotte?!” Brandon screamed, marching down the front steps until he was inches away from me. He didn't even notice the two security guards standing like stone pillars on either side of me. “Do you know what just happened?! I tried to pay the architect’s deposit this morning, and the bank manager called me looking like he’d seen a ghost! Every single account is frozen! Our credit lines are blocked! What did you do?!”

I didn't flinch. I looked past him, into the bright kitchen where the remnants of last night’s king crab shells and expensive wine bottles were still sitting unwashed on the counter.

“I locked my money, Brandon,” I said, my voice dead calm. “And I stopped paying for your family’s parasitic lifestyle.”

Gertrude pushed past her son, her face twisted in aristocratic fury. “You ungrateful, selfish little—! That money belongs to this household! Brandon is the man of the house, and you’re legally obligated to support our family enterprise! I’ll have your wages garnished! I’ll have the courts strip you of everything!”

“Try it, Gertrude,” a deep voice interrupted.

Marcus Thorne’s lead security operative stepped forward, flashing an official badge and a thick sheaf of legal documents stamped with emergency injunction seals. “Ma’am, any further harassment of Mrs. Pierce will be documented as an immediate violation of the federal restraining and asset-freeze orders currently being served to your legal counsel as we speak.”

Hailey stopped recording, her phone dropping slightly. “What... what is this? Who are these men, Char? Are you divorcing Brandon over some takeout food?! Are you insane?!”

May you like

“No, Hailey,” I said, walking up the front steps and brushing past my husband as if he were nothing more than a stranger blocking the hallway. “I’m not divorcing him over takeout food. I’m destroying you all because you tried to steal my house, my identity, and my daughter’s future.”
