Chapter 9 - The Heir’s Proposal

Three weeks later, the historical Hawthorne estate was hosting another high-society event—not a charity gala filled with fake smiles and whispered gossip, but an intimate, private dinner celebrating the successful corporate restructuring of Hawthorne-Vance Logistics.

The media had dubbed it the corporate merger of the decade. Victoria Vance sat comfortably at the helm of her cleansed empire, having successfully purged her father and sister from the board, keeping a cautious, respectful distance from Daniel Hawthorne and Emily Porter.

Out on the sweeping stone terrace overlooking the city skyline, the autumn wind rustled through the oak trees.

Emily stood near the balustrade, wearing a stunning, elegant emerald-green silk gown that caught the moonlight. The dark bruise on her cheek had long since faded, replaced by a quiet, untouchable confidence.

Footsteps echoed softly on the stone behind her.

“You’re standing out here in the cold again, Miss Porter,” Daniel’s voice murmured warmly.

Emily turned around, her heart skipping a beat as Daniel stepped closer. He wasn't wearing his formal gala tuxedo tonight; he wore an open-collared dress shirt, looking relaxed and completely at ease.

“I like the cold, Mr. Hawthorne,” Emily replied with a soft smile. “It keeps you awake.”

Daniel stopped just inches away from her, his dark eyes reflecting the city lights below. “You know, when I first saw you standing in my foyer, trembling against that staircase with a red mark across your face, I thought you were just another unfortunate victim of high-society cruelty.”

“And now?” Emily asked, tilting her head slightly.

“Now, I realize you were the storm that finally cleaned the air,” Daniel said, reaching out to gently take her hand in his. His thumb brushed softly over her knuckles. “And I find myself completely unable to imagine running my life—or my company—without you.”

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. The playful banter faded, replaced by something deep, steady, and entirely real.

“Are you offering me a lifetime contract, Mr. Hawthorne?” she whispered.

May you like

Daniel smiled, stepping even closer, his gaze locked onto hers. “Indefinite tenure. With zero possibility of termination.”
