Chapter 4 - The Unseen Alliance

Emily stared at the billionaire heir, her mind racing. For months, she had lived in absolute terror, looking over her shoulder every time she walked down the street, expecting a black sedan to pull up and drag her away. She had thought she was completely alone.

“You want to take down Vance Logistics,” Emily whispered, testing the weight of the words.

“I don't just want to take them down,” Daniel replied, his eyes gleaming with cold, calculated ambition. “I want to dismantle every single brick of their corporate empire. And you have the master keys.”

He reached out and gently tapped the brass zipper of the worn leather satchel sitting on his desk.

“The diamond necklace was just a distraction,” Daniel continued. “Vanessa knew you were working here under an alias. When she spotted you clearing tables in the west wing tonight, panic set in. She thought you had the digital hard drives containing the offshore routing numbers.”

“I don’t carry the hard drives with me,” Emily said quietly. “They’re stored in a secure encrypted cloud server that requires my biometric authorization and a physical security key.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow, a faint, appreciative smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Smart girl. Arthur Vance spent a fortune trying to track down those files, and you had them floating in the cloud right under his daughter’s nose.”

“They killed my mentor, Mr. Hawthorne,” Emily said, her voice dropping to a harsh, brittle whisper as memories of that terrible night rushed back. “David Chen. He tried to help me copy the ledgers. Two days later, his car went off an overpass on the highway. The police called it an accident. But I knew better.”

The temperature in the study seemed to drop ten degrees. Daniel’s expression hardened into stone.

“David Chen was a brilliant man,” Daniel said softly. “If Arthur Vance’s hands are dirty in his death, then embezzlement will be the least of their worries. They’ll spend the rest of their natural lives in a federal penitentiary.”

Emily looked down at her hands, feeling a fierce, burning resolve replace the terror that had gripped her for months. She had run for too long.

“What do you need me to do?” she asked.
