Chapter 7 - The Unholy Truce

Daniel Hawthorne walked slowly around his desk, stopping inches away from Victoria Vance. The two corporate titans stared each other down, calculating risk, profit, and survival in a single, silent handshake.

“You’re a remarkably cold woman, Victoria,” Daniel said quietly.

“I learned from the best,” Victoria replied, not blinking an eye. “So, Mr. Hawthorne, do we have a deal, or do you want to spend the next three years fighting my legal team in court while my father burns the evidence?”

Daniel looked over at Emily, silently asking for her verdict.

Emily took a deep breath. She looked at the worn leather satchel, then back at Victoria. She knew Victoria wasn't doing this out of kindness or justice; she was doing it for pure power. But sometimes, the greatest weapon against evil was another, sharper evil turning its blade inward.

“The ledgers on David Chen,” Emily said, her voice steady and clear. “I want them first. Before I hand over a single byte of my encrypted data.”

Victoria studied Emily for a long moment, a flicker of genuine respect crossing her sharp features.

“Fair enough,” Victoria said, reaching into her designer handbag and pulling out a small, encrypted black USB drive, placing it gently on the edge of the mahogany desk. “That contains the complete internal communications memo regarding David Chen’s brake lines, signed by my father’s chief of security. It’s all yours.”

Daniel reached out, picked up the USB drive, and plugged it directly into his secure terminal. A string of encrypted files appeared on the screen. He opened the top document—a digital audio transcript accompanied by a signed memo.

After thirty seconds of reading, Daniel looked up, his face grim. “It’s real. It’s direct proof of premeditated homicide.”

Emily closed her eyes for a second, a heavy burden lifting from her chest, replaced by a cold, sharp focus. She reached down, unzipped her satchel, and pulled out her own encrypted backup drive, sliding it across the desk toward Victoria.

“Pleasure doing business with you, Chief Executive Officer,” Emily said quietly.

Victoria picked up the drive, a victorious smile finally breaking across her flawless features. “Sleep with one eye open, Emily. Tomorrow morning, the Vance empire falls.”
