Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Marbles

Panic erupted in the foyer like a lit match hitting a gasoline drum.
City councilmen began whispering behind cupped hands, frantically pulling out their smartphones to check stock prices for Vance Logistics. Generational dynasties who had curtsied to the Vance family for decades suddenly found themselves backing away from Vanessa as if she carried a contagious disease.
“Is it true?” a prominent real estate developer muttered loudly to his wife. “Did she really try to frame a maid on live security feed?”
“Look at her face,” another whispered back. “She’s caught dead to rights. If the Hawthorne family cuts ties with Vance Logistics over this public scandal, their stock will open down thirty percent tomorrow morning.”
Vanessa backed away from the advancing security guards, her designer heels clicking frantically against the polished marble. Her eyes darted wildly around the room, seeking a single friendly face, a single ally among the elite who had praised her just twenty minutes ago.
Every single head turned away.
“You’ll pay for this, Daniel!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as two burly security guards grabbed her firmly by the elbows. “My father will destroy your shipping routes! He’ll block every berth in the harbor! You’re taking the side of a nobody—a criminal whistleblower who stole corporate secrets!”
The moment those words left her mouth, Vanessa froze. She bit her lower lip so hard it bled.
A sharp, dangerous spark ignited in Daniel Hawthorne’s eyes. He had suspected that Vanessa’s hatred for Emily went far beyond a petty class dispute. But hearing the word whistleblower drop from Vanessa’s desperate lips confirmed his deepest suspicions.
“Whistleblower?” Daniel repeated, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. “Interesting choice of words, Vanessa. I didn't say Miss Porter was a whistleblower. I said she was framed. How did you know she had secrets to hide?”
Vanessa thrashed against the guards, her face twisted in pure terror. “Get your hands off me! Let me go!”
As they dragged her kicking and screaming through the grand double doors and out into the autumn night, the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her shrieks.

The cavernous foyer fell silent once again. All eyes turned back to the center of the room, where Daniel Hawthorne stood beside the quiet, trembling housekeeper.
