Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

David walked up the concrete steps, ignoring Gertrude entirely, and stopped directly in front of Brandon, who was now trembling so violently he had to grip the doorframe to stay upright.
“Brandon Moretti?” David’s voice boomed across the motel parking lot, carrying the weight of federal authority.
“I… I’m Brandon,” my husband stammered, his eyes darting frantically between my brother and the three other agents blocking the exit. “Who are you? What is this?”
“I’m Special Agent David Moretti with the Department of Justice,” David said coldly, pulling a set of cold steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “You are being placed under arrest for identity theft, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit real estate forgery, and interstate financial manipulation.”
“This is a mistake!” Gertrude screamed, grabbing David’s arm. “You can’t arrest my son! We’re a respectable family! His wife is just having a hysterical breakdown!”
David turned his head slowly, looking down at Gertrude with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
“And you, Gertrude Moretti,” David said smoothly, pulling a second set of cuffs from his belt, “are being detained as a primary co-conspirator in an interstate financial fraud ring spanning three decades. You have the right to remain silent.”
Within seconds, the heavy steel clicks echoed through the dingy motel corridor. Brandon didn't fight back; his legs completely gave out under him, and he had to be half-carried by two agents toward the back of the federal SUV. Gertrude shrieked obscenities into the afternoon air until the rear door slammed shut, cutting off her voice entirely.
I stood on the concrete walkway, watching the tail lights of the federal convoy turn out onto the highway toward the federal detention center in downtown Los Angeles.
The air felt lighter. The sky above the desert mountains looked clearer.
Marcus stepped out of his sedan, walking over to me with a small, approving smile, holding out a white envelope.
“The emergency custody paperwork for Skylar has been approved by Family Court Judge Hernandez,” Marcus said quietly. “Exclusive occupancy of the San Bernardino estate has been granted to you, and Brandon’s name has been permanently expunged from all household liability.”
I took the envelope, sliding my fingers across the thick legal paper.
For six months, I had carried the suffocating weight of betrayal, fear, and exhaustion. I had pretended to be weak while secretly building a cage out of their own greed. They had thought they were the hunters, cornering a tired working mother in her own home.

They didn't realize they were walking into a trap with their eyes wide open.
