Chapter 8 - The Motel Interrogation

The Desert Palm Inn off Interstate 10 was the kind of place where neon signs flickered dead letters into the smoggy afternoon air and the asphalt parking lot smelled permanently of warm asphalt and stale cigarette smoke.
It was 4:00 PM when Marcus’s black sedan pulled into slot fourteen.
According to Julian’s burner phone location tracker—which Marcus had synced to his laptop in five minutes—Brandon and Gertrude were holed up in room 112, a dingy ground-floor unit with sagging curtains and a rusted air conditioning unit humming loudly in the window.
I stepped out of the car, adjusting my blazer. Marcus stayed in the driver's seat, keeping the engine running with the secure data uplink active.
I walked across the cracked pavement and knocked firmly on the wooden door of room 112.
Silence from inside.
I knocked again, harder this time. “Brandon! Open the door. I know you’re in there.”
A muffled scuffle echoed through the thin door, followed by Gertrude’s sharp, panicked whisper: “Tell her to go away! Call the police! Tell her she’s harassing us!”
The deadbolt clicked. The door swung open an inch, held back by a heavy security chain. Brandon’s bleary, bloodshot eyes peered out into the sunlight. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours, his shirt wrinkled and his hair unwashed.
When he saw it was me standing alone on the concrete walkway, his posture stiffened with a pathetic surge of renewed arrogance.
“Char?” Brandon sneered, trying to sound imposing despite looking like a drowning rat. “What are you doing here? Did you finally realize you can't run our household without me and come to beg us to come back?”
I didn't answer with words. I simply reached into my pocket, pulled out the burner phone Julian had given me, and pressed play on the loudest voice memo.
Brandon’s own amplified voice blasted through the motel corridor:
*“...how easy it was to manipulate you because you were always too tired from work to check the mail...”*
Brandon’s jaw dropped. The arrogant sneer vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.
Behind him, Gertrude shoved her way past her son, throwing the door wide open, her face twisted in a mask of furious desperation.
“You psychotic bitch!” Gertrude shrieked, lunging toward the doorway as if she wanted to claw my eyes out. “How dare you stalk us! How dare you ruin our lives over a few financial adjustments!”
Before Gertrude could take another step, two unmarked federal vehicles pulled silently into the parking lot on either side of Marcus’s sedan. Four men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing bold yellow FEDERAL AGENT lettering stepped out of the cars, surrounding room 112 in a synchronized, flawless tactical movement.
My brother, federal investigator David Moretti—yes, my brother, whose last name Brandon had foolishly forgotten was my maiden name, not his—stepped forward from the lead vehicle.

He didn't look like an affectionate sibling right now. He looked like an apex predator executing an arrest warrant.
