Chapter 6 - The Architect Arrives

At precisely 1:00 PM, the heavy brass door knocker sounded through the quiet house.
Marcus paused his typing and looked up. “Expecting company?”
“Only the architect,” I replied smoothly, checking my reflection in the hallway mirror. “The one Brandon hired to start the 'renovation' of my home.”
I walked to the front door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive Italian suit, holding a leather portfolio embossed with the logo: Vanguard Architectural & Design Group.
Behind him idling in the driveway was a sleek black Mercedes G-Wagon.
“Good afternoon,” the architect said with a polished, charming smile, extending a hand. “I’m Julian Vance—no relation to your husband, purely a business partner. I’m here to meet with Brandon regarding the primary construction phase and deposit authorization for the Palm Springs estate project.”
I didn't take his hand. I stood squarely in the doorway, my arms crossed, looking him up and down with an expression of icy detachment.
Julian’s smile faltered slightly as he dropped his hand. “Mrs. Moretti? Is something wrong?”
“Everything is wrong, Mr. Vance,” I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the afternoon air. “Step inside.”
Julian blinked, clearly taken aback by my lack of hospitality, but he stepped over the threshold, closing the door behind him. “I was told Brandon would have the wire transfer confirmation ready by noon. Without the twenty-five-thousand-dollar deposit, our contractors in Palm Springs can’t break ground on the foundation.”
“There is no Palm Springs project,” I said, turning on my heel and walking into the living room where Marcus sat quietly behind his laptop.
Julian frowned, following me into the room. “Excuse me? I’ve spent three weeks drawing up blueprints, securing county permits, and coordinating with Brandon and Gertrude on this build. We have a signed preliminary agreement.”
“Signed by whom?” I asked, turning to face him.
Julian paused, narrowing his eyes. “Signed by Brandon Moretti. As co-owner of the property.”
Marcus spun his laptop screen around so it faced Julian, displaying the official county property deed.
“Take a close look at that deed, Mr. Vance,” Marcus said smoothly. “Sole ownership under Charlotte Moretti, acquired three years before her marriage to Brandon. Furthermore, Brandon Moretti’s name was never added to the title. Any agreement he signed promising equity or construction rights on this property constitutes corporate fraud and attempted real estate forgery.”
Julian stared at the screen, the color rapidly draining from his sun-tanned face. He stepped back instinctively, his professional composure cracking.
“That’s… that’s impossible,” Julian stammered, shaking his head. “Brandon showed me a notarized spousal consent form giving him full managerial control over all household assets. He said his wife was fully on board!”
“My signature was forged,” I said softly, stepping closer to him. “And if you check your firm’s communication logs with Brandon over the last forty-eight hours, you’ll find that he was planning to fund your twenty-five-thousand-dollar deposit using an unauthorized home equity loan pulled from my mortgage.”
Julian’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. He wasn't a mastermind; he was a high-end contractor who had clearly been promised a lucrative payday by a desperate man who was writing checks he couldn't cash.
“I had no idea,” Julian whispered, holding his hands up defensively. “Brandon told me you were a silent partner who handled corporate logistics while he managed the family investments. He swore up and down that everything was legal!”
“Ignorance isn't a legal defense when you’re handling real estate transfers across state lines, Mr. Vance,” Marcus noted calmly, typing a quick command on his keyboard. “Especially when our investigator has already copied the email chain where you discussed skimming ten percent off the top into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”

Julian froze. The sophisticated architect facade vanished instantly, leaving behind a terrified middle-aged man realizing he was standing in the epicenter of a federal fraud investigation.
