Chapter 10 - Reclaimed

Three weeks later, the San Bernardino estate felt entirely different.
The air didn't smell of garlic butter and expensive wine paid for by stolen credit lines. It smelled of fresh coffee, blooming jasmine from the garden, and the sweet, uncomplicated laughter of an eleven-year-old girl baking chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen.
I stood at the kitchen island, wearing a comfortable silk robe, watching Skylar carefully measure out flour into a glass bowl.
“Mommy, can we invite Aunt Maya and Uncle David over for dinner tonight?” Skylar asked, looking up with flour dusted across her nose.
“We can invite whoever we want, sweetheart,” I smiled, walking over to wipe her nose with a soft paper towel. “Because this is our house. And no one will ever tell us what we are allowed to eat here again.”
Skylar beamed, throwing her arms around my waist and squeezing me tight. “Forever?”
“Forever,” I whispered, resting my chin on her dark curls.
Outside the large kitchen window, the morning sun poured over the manicured lawn and the sparkling blue pool. My phone on the counter buzzed once—a notification from my banking app showing a clean credit score, zero unauthorized inquiries, and a frozen corporate account undergoing court-ordered liquidation to pay back my legal fees.
