Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Power

A month after the funeral, the leaves in the courtyard of our family estate turned brilliant shades of copper, amber, and crimson.

I stood on the stone balcony overlooking the manicured gardens, holding a warm cup of black coffee. The estate was quiet—peaceful in a way it hadn't been in years. The frantic energy of corporate anxiety, the constant low-level dread of living a double life to hide my true background from a man who despised weakness, was entirely gone.

My phone buzzed on the iron patio table beside me.

I picked it up. It was a secure notification from the federal district court.

*Subject: Case Update — United States v. Holloway & Reed.*

*Plea agreement rejected by federal prosecutors based on comprehensive financial audit evidence. Trial date set for November 12. Maximum sentencing guidelines updated to 25 years federal custody.*

I swiped the notification away, locking the screen and setting the phone back down.

There was no satisfaction in his impending sentence anymore; it was simply the natural mathematical outcome of a system operating according to its own immutable laws of cause and effect.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me on the stone patio.

Samuel Vance stepped out onto the balcony, holding a fresh leather portfolio under his arm. He looked older, but his eyes were sharp and alert.

“Good morning, Madam Chairwoman,” Samuel greeted warmly. “The board meeting in London has been moved up by two hours due to the transatlantic logistics merger. Your private flight is fueled and waiting at O’Hare.”

I smiled, taking another sip of my coffee as I looked out past the iron gates toward the horizon, where a sleek private jet bearing the Aquila silver emblem was climbing silently into the morning sky.

“Let them wait, Samuel,” I said, turning to face him with absolute confidence. “For the first time in my life, I have nowhere to rush to, and an entire world left to run.”
