Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail

The paper felt crisp and heavy in my hand.
It was a forensic summary report compiled by Aquila’s internal investigations unit, dated three days before my mother’s passing. Attached to the financial breakdown was a series of wire transfer records routing millions of dollars in maintenance subsidies from Aquila’s regional hubs directly into an unregistered offshore trust managed by an LLC in the Cayman Islands.
The registered agent of that LLC wasn't Grant Holloway.
It was Marcus Vance.
Wait. Not Marcus.
I looked closer at the name printed at the bottom of the wire authorization slip: Markus Reed.
My eyes snapped from the paper to Vanessa, who was still frozen on the stairs of the jet.
“Reed,” I said aloud, watching the realization dawn on her terrified face. “Vanessa Reed. Not a mistress from a corporate mixer. A family relation.”
Grant’s eyes squeezed shut for a fraction of a second—the universal human tell of someone realizing the trap had just snapped shut around their neck.
“She’s his sister, Claire,” Samuel Vance explained quietly, standing beside me. “Markus Reed—or Marcus Vale, as he styled himself in real estate circles—was using Vanessa as the primary conduit for the shell company. They were systematically draining Holloway Capital’s liquidity while simultaneously bleeding Aquila’s secondary logistics accounts, planning to declare a manufactured corporate bankruptcy and flee to Zurich by the end of the month.”
The pieces clicked into place with horrifying, elegant precision.
The “emergency board meetings.” The sudden trips to Europe. The expensive gifts disguised as client appreciation tokens. They weren't just running a routine affair behind my back; they were orchestrating a multi-million-dollar corporate heist, using my marriage as a convenient camouflage and my mother’s declining health as their countdown timer.
Vanessa finally lost her composure. She bolted down the metal stairs, running across the tarmac toward us, her heels clicking frantically against the asphalt.
“Grant, you idiot!” she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at him. “I told you we should have waited until the probate files were signed! I told you she was too smart!”
Grant whipped around, his face contorting into unbridled fury, and swung his hand back to strike her.
Before his palm could connect, one of the Aquila security guards moved like lightning. He caught Grant’s wrist mid-air, twisting his arm downward with enough force to make the billionaire groan in agony. The second guard stepped in, pressing Grant face-first against the side of the black executive sedan with a heavy thud.

“Assault on federal aviation property,” the guard stated calmly into his shoulder radio. “Requesting immediate airport police intervention for detainment.”
