Chapter 4 - The Fire That Unites the Mountain

The battle on the Border Ridge was a nightmare of sound and fury. Flames licked against the ancient pines, scorching the night sky into a violent shade of bruised purple and burning orange.
Warlord Vulgor lunged forward, his massive talons swinging toward Alpha Thorne, who dodged the blow with agile grace before sinking his teeth deep into the dragon’s armored forearm. Vulgor roared in agony, unleashing a sweeping tail strike that sent several wolves crashing into the rocky hillside.
Amidst the carnage, Ignis and Nox found themselves trapped in the center of the crossfire.
"Ignis, run!" Nox barked, shoving the baby dragon toward a narrow escape fissure leading deeper into the mountain.
"I'm not leaving you!" Ignis shouted back stubbornly, planting his feet firmly on the scorched stone.
Suddenly, a massive boulder—loosened by the tremors of the fight—broke free from the ledge above and plummeted directly downward, landing squarely between the battling factions with a deafening crash. The impact triggered a violent landslide. Tons of burning shale, mud, and heavy rock cascaded down the mountain slope, burying the fighters in a cloud of blinding dust and ash.
A sharp cry pierced the air.
Ignis’s eyes widened in horror. Through the swirling gray smoke, he saw that Vulgor and Alpha Thorne had been pinned beneath a massive slab of fallen granite, their bodies trapped just feet away from a rapidly spreading wall of uncontained wildfire fueled by leaking resin from the shattered pines.
The rest of the wolves and dragons had been thrown backward down the ridge, unconscious or struggling to dig themselves out of the rubble. Only Ignis and Nox stood standing in the clearing, untouched by the initial slide.
"Help them!" Nox urged, rushing toward the fallen boulder trapping his father.
Ignis didn't hesitate. He scrambled over the hot stones, planting his shoulders against the heavy granite slab where Vulgor and Thorne lay trapped. Vulgor looked up at the tiny dragon he had threatened only moments before, his fierce eyes wide with stunned disbelief.
"Ignis... get away..." Vulgor rasped, coughing up dark smoke. "Save yourself..."
"I won't let you die," Ignis strained, his muscles burning as he pushed with every ounce of his strength.
Nox joined him on the other side, using his powerful hind legs to claw desperately at the dirt beneath the rock, while Ignis unleashed a steady, controlled stream of bright blue flame against the base of the stone to weaken its structural integrity.
With a combined heave fueled by desperation and a desperate hope for peace, the rock groaned, tilted forward, and rolled down the slope into the ravine below.
Vulgor and Thorne scrambled out from beneath the debris, coughing violently, their massive bodies bruised and battered. For a long, agonizing moment, the two rival leaders stood face-to-face amidst the smoldering ruins of the ridge, neither of them reaching for their claws or their fire.
They looked down at Ignis and Nox, standing side-by-side, panting heavily, their small bodies covered in soot and ash, yet unbroken.

Slowly, Alpha Thorne lowered his head in a silent gesture of profound respect. And for the first time in a thousand years, Warlord Vulgor did something no dragon had ever done before: he bowed his head in return.
