Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Shadow Forest

Night fell over the Ironfang Mountains like a heavy velvet shroud, plunging the ravines into freezing darkness. Deep within the cavernous lair of the Crimson Scale clan, the roaring fires cast dancing, monstrous shadows against the blackened stone walls.
Ignis curled tightly into a ball in the corner of his sleeping alcove, his copper tail wrapped protectively around a squirming, dark-furred form hidden beneath a pile of dried moss.
The wolf pup—whom Ignis had mentally dubbed "Nox" because of his dark, shadow-like coat—was sleeping soundly, his breathing steady now that his injured leg had been crudely bound with strips of soft moss and spider silk by the resourceful baby dragon.
Suddenly, heavy, thunderous footsteps echoed outside the cave entrance.
Ignis’s heart leaped into his throat. He scrambled forward, frantically pulling more moss over the sleeping pup just as the massive, obsidian-scaled figure of Vulgor, the clan’s grand warlord and Ignis’s uncle, ducked into the cavern. Vulgor’s eyes glowed like dying embers in the dark, his scarred muzzle twisting into a permanent, menacing snarl.
"Ignis," Vulgor rumbled, his voice shaking the loose pebbles from the ceiling. "Why is the eastern perimeter patrol reporting strange scents near the lower gorge? Have you been wandering near the wolf territory again?"
Ignis forced his trembling wings flat against his back, trying to look as small and harmless as possible. "N-no, Uncle Vulgor. I stayed near the river stones all afternoon."
Vulgor’s massive head tilted suspiciously. He sniffed the air, his powerful nostrils flaring. For a terrifying second, Ignis thought the warlord would catch the distinct, musky scent of canine clinging to the damp cave walls. But the sulfurous smoke of the clan’s central forge masked the air completely.
"See that you do," Vulgor warned, stepping closer and looming over the tiny dragon like a mountain of dark steel. "The Shadow Claws have been restless. Their alpha, Thorne, claims one of his prized pups vanished near the border ravine today. If we find out a dragon had anything to do with it, I will personally strip your scales and leave you to freeze on the peak."
With a disdainful snort, Vulgor turned and stomped out into the night, his heavy tail slamming against the stone floor on his way out.
Ignis exhaled a breath he didn't realize he’d been holding, collapsing backward onto his haunches. He crawled quickly back to the moss pile, lifting the green camouflage with his snout.
Nox was awake, his amber eyes wide and alert in the dim light. The pup hadn't made a single sound during the interrogation, displaying a cunning discipline far beyond his tiny frame.
"That was close," Ignis whispered softly, tapping his snout gently against Nox’s ear. "If my uncle had found you, we'd both be dragon-flame barbecue."
Nox let out a soft, inquiring chirp—a sound half-wolf, half-puppy—and pressed his damp nose against Ignis’s copper scales. Despite the terrifying reality of their situation, an undeniable bond had forged between them, born from the shared defiance of an ancient, senseless hatred.
Over the next three weeks, as Nox’s injured leg slowly healed under Ignis’s secret care, the two young outcasts formed an unbreakable alliance. Ignis sneaked scraps of roasted mountain goat and fresh spring water into the cave every day, while Nox—despite being a wolf—learned to mimic the playful, bounding leaps of a dragon whelp.
