Chapter 3 - The Betrayal at the Border Ridge

The crisp autumn air carried the sharp scent of impending winter down the craggy slopes of the Ironfang Mountains. Ignis and Nox—now considerably larger and bolder—had ventured further than usual, reaching the neutral plateau known as the Border Ridge, where the jagged dragon peaks bled into the thick pine forests of the wolf packs.

Nox scampered across the smooth granite rocks, his once-injured leg fully healed and moving with incredible, silent grace, while Ignis clumsy-flew behind him, his copper wings catching the updrafts with joyous clumsy loops.

"Careful, Nox!" Ignis chirped, landing heavily with a clatter of loose stones. "If the border guards see us here, we're both dead meat!"

"They won't see us," Nox barked playfully, tossing his dark head and dashing behind a thick cluster of boulder pines.

Suddenly, the playful atmosphere vanished instantly.

From the dense shadows of the forest to the left, and the towering rock ledges to the right, low, menacing growls echoed across the ridge. Within seconds, the clearing was surrounded.

From the forest emerged a dozen massive Shadow Claw wolves, their silver-tipped fur bristling, their yellow eyes fixed with absolute hostility on the baby dragon. Leading them was a towering grey wolf with a jagged scar across his muzzle—Alpha Thorne himself.

Simultaneously, from the rocky ledges above, a squad of Crimson Scale dragon warriors dropped heavily onto the stone, led by none other than Warlord Vulgor, his jaws smoking with restless fire.

The air grew instantly thick with lethal tension. Two mortal enemies, brought face-to-face in a standoff over a single clearing.

"Thorne!" Vulgor bellowed, stepping forward and unfurling his massive obsidian wings to their full, terrifying width. "What is the meaning of this intrusion on dragon soil? Have your mangy dogs forgotten the treaty?"

Alpha Thorne stepped forward, his teeth bared, his deep voice vibrating through the canyon. "Save your breath, lizard. My scouts tracked my missing son—the heir to the Shadow Claw pack—straight to this ridge. And look what we found him with."

Thorne’s amber eyes shifted toward Nox, who stood frozen between the two factions.

Vulgor’s massive head snapped around. His glowing red eyes locked onto Ignis, who stood trembling beside the wolf pup. A wave of pure, incandescent rage washed over the dragon warlord’s face.

"Ignis..." Vulgor snarled, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "You harbor a wolf? You betrayed your own blood for a mutt?"

"He's not a mutt! He's my friend!" Ignis cried out bravely, stepping in front of Nox to shield the smaller pup with his copper wings, though his entire body shook with fear.

"Kill them both!" Vulgor roared, opening his massive jaws as a torrent of searing orange flame surged toward the clearing.

At the exact same instant, Alpha Thorne howled a command of pure fury, lunging forward with his pack to intercept the strike. The Border Ridge erupted into absolute chaos as steel, claw, fire, and blood clashed in a brutal, deafening war.
