Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Gate

Three days later, a battered commercial airliner touched down at Logan International Airport, disgorging a thoroughly exhausted, sunburned, and utterly defeated group of travelers.
Evelyn, Richard, and Chloe stepped out into the chilly Boston drizzle, looking a far cry from the glamorous family that had boarded a private charter flight less than a week ago. They didn't have a chauffeured town car waiting for them at the arrivals curb. They had to take an ordinary cab.
When the taxi pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, Evelyn stepped out, clutching her designer handbag like a shield.
She walked up to the front entrance and reached into her purse for her heavy brass house key. She slid it into the lock and turned it.

The deadbolt didn't budge. The locks had been changed.
"What is this?!" Evelyn shrieked, banging her fist against the heavy mahogany door. "Arthur! Open this door right now!"
The door didn't open. Instead, a sleek black sedan pulled up the driveway, and a sharp, professional-looking woman in a charcoal business suit stepped out, holding a thick manila envelope.
She walked up the steps with calm, unyielding confidence.
"Are you Mrs. Evelyn Vance?" the woman asked politely.
"Yes, I am!" Evelyn snapped, glaring at her. "And who the hell are you?"
"My name is Sarah Sterling, legal counsel for Arthur Vance," the attorney stated clearly, handing the manila envelope directly to Evelyn. "This is a formal notice of legal separation, a petition for expedited divorce proceedings based on financial misconduct and breach of marital trust, and a property eviction notice."
Richard pushed past his mother, his face dark with rage. "You can't evict us! That's our family home!"
"Mr. Richard Vance, you are also named in this filing," the attorney continued, unfazed, pulling a second envelope from her briefcase and handing it to him. "This is a civil summons for the recovery of misappropriated corporate funds, alongside a permanent restraining order barring you from entering Vanguard Engineering property."
Richard stared at the papers in his hands, his breath catching in his throat as the reality of his total ruin finally crashed down upon him.
"Where are our things?" Chloe asked quietly, tears streaming down her face as she looked at the attorney. "Where are we supposed to go?"
"Your personal belongings have been packed into storage units paid for by Mr. Vance for thirty days," the attorney replied professionally. "The keys and access codes are detailed in your respective packets. Good day."

Without another word, the attorney turned, walked back to her sedan, and drove away, leaving the former elite of Boston standing out in the cold rain on the front steps of a home that would never let them back in.
