Chapter 3 - The Departure Lounge

At 5:15 AM the next morning, the main house was a flurry of expensive luggage, designer travel bags, and high-pitched excitement.

Evelyn stood in the marble foyer wearing a cream-colored cashmere travel suit, tapping her gold-plated watch. Richard, her thirty-year-old biological son and Vanguard Engineering’s vice president of operations, was scrolling through his phone while his fiancée, a socialite named Clarissa, adjusted her oversized sunglasses indoors. Chloe and Tyler were bickering over who got the window seat on the charter jet.

"Arthur, hurry up!" Evelyn called out toward the master study. "The private pilot said he’s taking off at six sharp, and you know how strict Logan’s tarmac slots are!"

Arthur stepped out of the study. He wasn't wearing a casual resort polo or linen trousers. He was dressed in a sharp, tailored charcoal business suit, carrying a single leather briefcase.

Evelyn stopped tapping her watch and frowned. "Arthur? Where is your travel bag? You're not wearing your flight clothes."

Arthur walked slowly down the grand staircase, his expression carved from granite. He stopped on the landing, looking down at his wife and children with a cold, piercing detachment that made the room fall instantly silent.

"I'm not going," Arthur said clearly.

Evelyn blinked, letting out an incredulous laugh. "What do you mean, you're not going? We spent six months planning this! The resort is fully paid for, the charter is waiting, and the board knows you're taking two weeks off!"

"The board knows I'm taking a leave of absence," Arthur corrected smoothly, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket and sliding it onto the entry table. "Starting today. And I am not going to Turks and Caicos because I have decided to take a very different kind of trip."

Richard stepped forward, frowning in annoyance. "Dad, stop messing around. We have to be on the tarmac in forty minutes. What is this about?"

"This," Arthur said, tapping the document on the table, "is a complete restructuring notice for Vanguard Engineering. Effective immediately, I have revoked Richard’s executive signing authority, frozen his corporate credit lines, and reallocated his office to the basement archives."

The foyer erupted.

"Are you insane?!" Richard shouted, his face turning bright red. "You're freezing my authority right before the municipal bond vote next week?! Without me, the firm loses the entire Waterfront contract!"

"The firm won't lose anything," Arthur replied, his voice cutting cleanly through Richard’s panic. "Because Maya finished the stress analysis for the Waterfront project three days ago—working alone in the guest house while you all planned a vacation to celebrate your brilliance."

Evelyn stepped forward, her face twisted in absolute fury and disbelief. "You're doing this over Maya? You're ruining a family vacation and disrupting the company because your golden-child daughter didn't get a ticket to the beach?!"

"Maya is my daughter," Arthur said, descending the final step and walking past his stunned family toward the front door. "And she is the only person in this house who actually earned her place at my table."

"Arthur! If you walk out that door, don't expect me to be here when you get back!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing off the marble walls.

Arthur paused with his hand on the heavy brass door handle. He didn't turn around.

"Take your time, Evelyn," Arthur said coldly. "Pack all your bags. Because when you return from your wonderful vacation, you'll find the locks on this house have been changed."
