Chapter 4 - The Guest House Office

While the private charter flight soared south toward the turquoise waters of the Caribbean carrying an increasingly panicked and furious family, the morning sun broke quietly over the Massachusetts trees, casting a warm golden light across the lawn of the Vance estate.

Maya sat at her desk in the guest house, staring in sheer disbelief at the notification blinking on her laptop screen.

*CRITICAL UPDATE: User permissions elevated to Chief Technical Officer / Managing Partner.*

*Authorization Token: Arthur Vance.*

Her phone buzzed violently against the wooden desktop. It was an internal corporate alert from the firm's HR director, followed by a direct text message from her father: Meet me in my main office at 9:00 AM, CTO. We have a company to run.

Maya covered her mouth with her hands, a breathless laugh escaping her lips as tears pricked the corners of her eyes. For years, she had done the heavy lifting behind the scenes while Richard took the credit in boardrooms and cocktail parties. She had accepted the crumbs because she loved engineering, and she loved her father.

She never dreamed her father would burn his own house down to defend her honor.

At 8:45 AM, Maya walked out of the guest house, trading her usual worn cardigan for a sharp, tailored navy blazer she had kept hidden in the back of her closet for special occasions. When she stepped into the main house, the silence was deafening. The luggage was gone, the frantic energy had vanished, and the air smelled faintly of Evelyn’s expensive perfume—lingering like a ghost of a life that was already disintegrating.

She grabbed her leather portfolio and walked out to her car.

When Maya pulled into the subterranean parking garage of Vance Engineering forty minutes later, the atmosphere in the executive suite was absolute chaos.

Several senior project managers were huddled around the coffee machine, whispering frantically. As Maya stepped out of the elevator, David Thorne, the head of legal compliance, rushed toward her with a stack of emergency briefs.

"Maya! Thank God you're here," David said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Your father locked Richard out of the primary server network at 6:00 AM. Half the junior staff are panicking because Richard’s accounts are locked, and nobody knows who is signing off on the municipal bond filings!"

"I know," Maya said calmly, taking the files from David’s hands with a steady, assured grace. "I wrote the bond filings."

David stared at her for a second, then a slow, understanding smile spread across his face. "Welcome to the C-suite, Maya."
