Chapter 7 - The New Order at Vanguard

Back in Boston, the atmosphere inside Vanguard Engineering was electric with renewed energy and purpose.

For years, the company had been weighed down by nepotism, inflated administrative costs, and the toxic entitlement of Richard and his circle of sycophants. With Marcus Thorne removed from the board and Richard’s executive access permanently revoked, the engineering department was finally free to innovate.

Maya sat at her new desk in the corner office—formerly Richard’s sprawling, sunlit suite, which she had insisted on stripping of its ostentatious decor and converting into a functional, collaborative workspace.

Arthur walked in carrying two cups of black coffee, setting one down on her desk before leaning against the bookshelf.

"The municipal bond committee just called," Arthur said, a proud smile touching the corners of his mouth. "They unanimously approved our structural design for the harbor bridge. They specifically cited your stress-analysis models as the most thorough engineering proposal the city has seen in a decade."

Maya looked up from her blueprints, beaming with genuine pride. "We did it together, Dad. But it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't given me the authority to streamline the workflow."

"I gave you what was rightfully yours," Arthur corrected gently. He took a sip of his coffee, his expression turning slightly more serious. "I received an email from Evelyn’s lawyer an hour ago."

Maya’s smile faded slightly. "What did they say?"

"They're trying to schedule a mediation session," Arthur sighed, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window toward the Boston skyline. "Evelyn wants to negotiate a property settlement. She realizes the house is entirely in my name, and her personal credit cards have been permanently deactivated. She wants to know what terms I'm offering."

"And what are you going to offer?" Maya asked quietly.

"Fair market value for her initial personal assets, and nothing more," Arthur stated firmly. "No alimony for a partner who conspired to alienate my daughter and loot my company. The marriage is over, Maya. There is no going back to the way things were."

Maya stood up, walked around the desk, and wrapped her arms around her father’s waist, resting her head against his shoulder.

"You did the right thing, Dad," she whispered.

"I know," Arthur replied, holding her close. "For the first time in thirty years... I finally feel like I'm building something that will last."
