Chapter 2 - The View Through the Glass

The heavy black sedan glided silently along the stone-paved driveway, coming to a halt near the grand fountain. Jonathan Vance turned off the ignition, a tired smile crossing his face as he anticipated the warm welcome of his children after a grueling fourteen-hour board meeting. But as he stepped out of the vehicle and walked toward the front entrance, a strange, heavy silence hung over the estate. He noticed the front door was slightly ajar, and faint, muffled cries echoed from the rear garden.

Frowning, Jonathan changed his direction, walking quietly around the side of the mansion toward the back patio. As he peered through the large French windows overlooking the rear lawn, his breath caught violently in his throat.

There, locked tightly inside the massive steel doghouse, were his two children. Little Lily was curled around baby Noah, shielding him from the cold wind while weeping silently, her tiny hands clutching the metal bars.

Standing just a few feet away, Victoria was casually filing her nails, humming a tune as if she were waiting for a delivery rather than torturing a five-year-old and a toddler.

Jonathan’s world shattered into a million jagged pieces, instantly replaced by a cold, lethal fury that burned hotter than white phosphorus. He didn't shout. He didn't run. He moved with the terrifying, predatory calm of a man whose entire universe had just been threatened.

He strode across the grass, his footsteps silent until he reached the doghouse. With a sudden, explosive jerk, Jonathan grabbed the heavy steel padlock, wrenched it clean off its mounting bracket, and flung the iron door wide open.

“Daddy!” Lily sobbed, throwing herself into his arms.

Jonathan scooped both children up into a fierce, unbreakable embrace, his eyes locked onto Victoria, who spun around in absolute horror, her nail file slipping from her fingers and clattering onto the stone patio as color drained entirely from her face.
