Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut around Vanessa’s wrists with a harsh, metallic snap that echoed through the luxurious hotel suite.
She stumbled backward against the glass dining table, her champagne flute shattering on the carpet, soaking the hem of her silk robe in sparkling wine.
“You can’t do this!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with sheer hysteria as the marshals pulled her arms behind her back. “David! Tell them to stop! We’re married! You can’t testify against me!”
I stepped into the suite, stopping two feet away from her. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I simply looked down at her with absolute, unyielding indifference.
“Our marriage was dissolved the moment you made my four-year-old daughter clean up your filth while threatening to throw her out into the cold,” I said quietly. “And your financial empire was dissolved the moment you decided to steal from a man who documented everything.”
Agent Miller gently guided her toward the doorway, leading her out into the hallway as she sobbed hysterically, her expensive slippers dragging uselessly against the carpet.
I stood alone in the center of Suite 1402 for a long moment, listening to the hum of the air conditioner and the distant sirens wailing down on Michigan Avenue.
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out and unlocked the screen. A video notification from our home security system.
I tapped the thumbnail.
The live feed opened, showing our kitchen at home. Leo was sitting at the island, helping Emma trace shapes on a coloring book while a clean, sparkling white dish hummed quietly in the brand-new dishwasher behind them.
Emma looked up toward the camera lens, as if she knew I was watching, and waved happily.
“Daddy, come home soon!” her sweet voice echoed through my phone speaker.
I smiled, slipping the phone back into my pocket, and turned toward the exit.

The dishes were done. The house was safe. And the storm had finally passed.
