Chapter 2 - The Packing of the Past

The heavy deadbolt clicked shut, sealing out Vanessa’s muffled screams and the furious pounding of her fists against the solid oak front door.
For a long moment, I stood in the dim entryway, staring down at my trembling hands. The adrenaline was slowly receding, leaving behind a cold, metallic taste in my mouth and a dull, throbbing ache in my temples. How had I let this happen? Six months ago, when Vanessa moved in, she had played the part of the doting, caring stepmother so convincingly that I had actually believed my children had a chance at a normal home after their mother passed away.
Instead, I had invited a monster under my roof while I worked sixty-hour weeks trying to keep our family afloat.
I turned around and walked slowly up the stairs. The hallway light was on, casting a warm glow beneath Leo’s bedroom door. I pushed it open gently.
Leo, who had just turned ten last month, was sitting on the edge of his bottom bunk. Emma was curled up in his lap, her thumb tucked deep inside her mouth, fast asleep from sheer exhaustion. Her small, red hands were wrapped in a soft, damp towel Leo had fetched from the bathroom.
“Is she gone, Dad?” Leo asked quietly, looking up at me with eyes that were far too old for a child his age.
“She’s gone, buddy,” I said, kneeling down beside them and smoothing a strand of hair away from Emma’s damp forehead. “I am so, so sorry you guys had to see that. I’m sorry I wasn't here.”
“It wasn't your fault, Dad,” Leo whispered, his lower lip trembling slightly. “She’s been doing it for weeks. Whenever you’re at the office late. She said if we told you, you’d send us away to live with strangers because you’d be too tired to deal with us.”
A cold chill ran straight down my spine. The psychological cruelty of it—isolating my children, weaponizing their deepest fears against them while I was out earning the money that paid for Vanessa’s clothes, her wine, and her lifestyle.
“Nobody is going anywhere,” I said firmly, taking Leo’s hand and squeezing it tight. “From now on, I’m not working late. I’m not traveling. It’s just us. Do you understand?”
Leo nodded, a single tear escaping down his cheek before he quickly wiped it away with his sleeve. “Can we stay in my room tonight?”
“We can stay right here,” I replied, pulling the blankets up over both of them.
I sat in the chair beside the bed, watching them breathe until the house grew completely silent. But my mind was already racing ahead. Vanessa wouldn't just pack her bags and disappear. She was vindictive, she was entitled, and legally, our financial lives were tangled together in ways I hadn't fully audited yet.
By midnight, I stood up quietly, walked down to my home office, powered up my laptop, and opened our joint bank statements.
What I found on the screen made my blood run cold.
Over the last four months, while I was busy trusting the woman running my household, over forty thousand dollars had been quietly siphoned out of our primary savings account and transferred into an external routing number registered under a corporate entity I didn't recognize.
