Chapter 10 - The Unbroken House

The autumn rain beat a gentle, rhythmic tattoo against the windows of our home on Oakridge Lane, but inside, the house felt warmer and brighter than it had in years.
I sat at the kitchen island with Leo and Emma, helping them build a towering castle out of plastic building blocks while the television played softly in the background. The smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies filled the air, replacing the stale, sour scent of the past with something sweet, real, and permanent.
My phone rested peacefully on the counter, silent and undisturbed. No frantic calls from attorneys, no fraudulent wire alerts, no threats whispered in the dark.
Leo reached across the table, snapping a blue block onto the top of the castle spire before looking up at me with a wide, proud grin. “Look, Dad! It’s taller than the last one!”
“It’s the strongest one yet, buddy,” I laughed, wrapping my arm around his shoulders and pulling him close, while Emma leaned comfortably against my other side, her thumb finally abandoned for good.
