Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

Two weeks passed with a quiet, healing rhythm that felt almost miraculous.
The dirty dishes were gone, replaced by a new industrial dishwasher I had installed over the weekend. Emma’s hands had healed completely, and her laughter—a bright, musical sound I hadn't heard in months—finally filled the hallways of the house again. Leo was back to playing soccer in the backyard, and every evening we sat down together for family dinner without fear, without shouting, and without shadows.
Yet, beneath the surface of my new routine, a nagging suspicion remained.
Vanessa wasn't the type of person to simply vanish into the night after losing her access to my bank accounts. She was ambitious, vindictive, and deeply connected to a network of high-net-worth socialites who cared more about image than ethics.
It was a Tuesday evening when the other shoe finally dropped.
I was sitting in my home office reviewing quarterly logistics reports when my front security camera alert chimed softly on my desktop screen.
*Motion detected at front perimeter.*
I clicked the thumbnail to open the live feed.
Standing on my front porch wasn't Vanessa. It was a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive tailored charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase. He wasn't knocking on the door; he was staring directly into the camera lens with a cold, piercing gaze, as if he knew I was watching him in real-time.
I hit the intercom button on my computer. “Can I help you?”
The man didn't flinch at the speaker’s metallic crackle. He simply spoke into the empty air, his voice clear and resonant.

“Open the door, David,” he said. “We need to talk about what your wife stole before she met you.”
