Chapter 4 - The Midnight Siege

By midnight, a thick, eerie fog had rolled in from the river, blanketing the sprawling lawns of the Miller estate in a dense white shroud. Inside the mansion, all the lights had been dimmed except for the strategic security grid monitors glowing in the study. Sarah sat upstairs in the children's nursery, watching over little Liam and Chloe as they slept peacefully in their beds, completely unaware of the war raging around them.

Suddenly, the soft hum of the mansion’s ventilation system was interrupted by a low, metallic clunk.

The master power grid flickered once, twice, and then plunged into total darkness. Emergency backup generators kicked in three seconds later, bathing the hallways in a faint, eerie red glow.

Downstairs in the foyer, the reinforced glass of the front double doors shattered inward with a deafening crash. Three masked intruders in tactical gear poured into the house, moving with military precision, weapons raised.

"Clear the ground floor! Secure the master suite!" a raspy voice hissed through a communication headset.

They didn't expect Mark Miller to be waiting for them at the top of the grand staircase.

Standing in the dim red light, Mark held a custom-licensed tactical shotgun, his posture rigid and unyielding. Beside him stood Marcus and four elite private security operatives. You entered the wrong house," Mark’s voice echoed across the vaulted foyer, carrying the weight of a death sentence.

Before the intruders could raise their weapons, Marcus and the security team opened fire with non-lethal suppression rounds, neutralizing the front wave in seconds. The second wave tried to retreat toward the broken glass doors, only to find the perimeter completely locked down by local law enforcement and federal agents coordinated by Mark’s rapid-response legal team.

Elena, who had been waiting in a getaway car parked just outside the golden gates, watched in horror as her tactical team was dragged out in handcuffs by federal marshals. Before she could throw her car into reverse, two unmarked police cruisers boxed her vehicle in, their bright blue and red strobes painting her terrified face in flashing colors.

The siege was over almost as quickly as it had begun, leaving the estate silent once more—this time, permanently cleared of the shadows that had threatened to consume them.
