Chapter 3 - The Traitor Within the Gates

The digital footprint uncovered by Marcus Vance, Mark’s head of security, sent a shockwave through the upper levels of the estate. The security logs clearly showed that Elena hadn't simply hacked her way past the multi-million-dollar biometric fence; she had been given a temporary guest access card by someone with master clearance—someone who sat at the edge of their daily lives.

Down in the modernized kitchen, under the bright glow of recessed lighting, the staff had been gathered by security. Among them stood Martha, the head cook who had served the family for over eight years, her hands trembling as she clutched a dish towel.

Mark stood at the head of the marble island, towering over the room, his voice dangerously quiet. "Someone gave Elena the master override code for the west gate at 2:14 PM today. Care to explain who it was?"

Silence stretched across the room, heavy and suffocating. Martha burst into tears, dropping her towel and taking a step forward.

"Mr. Miller, I had no choice!" Martha sobbed, covering her face. "They have my son! Some men—associates of Elena’s family—intercepted him downtown yesterday. They said if I didn't let her into the house to retrieve financial documents from your study, they would break his legs!"

Sarah stepped forward from the doorway, her initial anger instantly softening into deep empathy, though her protective instincts remained razor-sharp. "Martha, why didn't you come to us? We could have protected him!"

"You don't understand how dangerous they are," Martha wept, shaking her head. "They aren't just corporate rivals. They operate in the shadows."

Mark’s jaw tightened. He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialed a direct line, and spoke with cold, absolute authority. "Marcus, deploy the tactical unit to the coordinates Martha’s son’s phone was last pinged at. Extract him safely, and bring the guards holding him directly to the basement holding cells. No exceptions."

He clicked off the phone and looked back at the terrified housekeeper. "Your son will be home within the hour, Martha. But your employment here ends tonight. Pack your things."

As Martha nodded tearfully and rushed out of the room, Sarah looked up at Mark, realizing that the danger they were facing wasn't just a bitter ex-partner’s granddaughter—it was an organized syndicate trying to tear their family apart from the inside out.
