Chapter 2 - The Hospital Resuscitation and the Federal Net**

The transition from the violent, freezing ocean to the sterile, brightly lit trauma bay of the private naval medical ship happened in a blur of motion, shouts, and frantic medical personnel.
“We have severe placental abruption! Vital signs are dropping! Prep for emergency C-section right now!” a surgeon’s voice commanded over the hum of the heart monitors.
The drugged fog in my brain began to clear, replaced by searing, blinding pain as the medical team worked with military precision to save my son. I gripped the steel railing of the gurney, my knuckles white, whispering desperate prayers into the empty air.
Standing just outside the surgical suite’s glass doors, dressed in full military dress uniform with four stars gleaming on his shoulders, was my father. Admiral Hector Sterling’s face was carved from stone, his steel-gray eyes fixed on the operating table. But beneath his unyielding exterior, the fierce, protective love of a father burned with a terrifying intensity.
“She’s crashing, Admiral,” a medic warned.
“She is a Sterling,” my father’s voice rang out, steady and absolute. “She doesn't quit. Save my grandson.”
With one final, earth-shattering push of will, aided by the surgical team’s skilled hands, the sharp, beautiful cry of a newborn baby pierced the room.
A nurse rushed forward, holding up a tiny, squirming form wrapped in a sterile blanket. “It’s a boy, Mrs. Vance! He’s breathing!”
Tears of profound relief flooded my eyes as exhaustion finally dragged me down into a deep, dreamless sleep.
When I woke up hours later, the rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the private VIP recovery room. My baby boy—whom I quietly named Leo—was resting safely in a specialized incubator right beside my bed, sleeping with the peaceful cadence of an innocent angel.
Sitting in a leather armchair beside the window was my father. He had traded his military cap for civilian clothes, but his posture remained military-strict. He was looking at a thick, encrypted tablet containing digital dossiers, financial ledgers, and intercepted text messages.
“How is he?” I whispered, my voice still hoarse from the salt water.
Dad looked up, his expression softening instantly as he walked over to my bedside and took my hand in his large, warm palm.
“He’s strong, Genevieve. Has his mother’s fighting spirit,” Dad said softly, kissing my forehead. “The doctors say he’s completely healthy, despite the ordeal. And you’re going to make a full recovery.”
“And Julian?” I asked, a cold fire igniting in my chest.
Dad’s smile vanished, replaced by a dark, dangerous glint. “Julian Vance and his little mistress thought they had executed the perfect crime. They assumed you were just a naive corporate wife with no backup. They didn't know who my family was. But as of two hours ago, federal agents and military police have locked down Vance Technologies, frozen all of his offshore accounts, and placed both Julian and Victoria under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, and white-collar fraud.”
I stared at my father, a profound sense of vindication washing over me. Julian had spent years building his empire on the silent, secret financial backing of my personal accounts, treating me like a disposable asset.
