Chapter 3 - The Interrogation of Shadows**

Sirens began wailing in the distance, their sharp, cascading notes rapidly swelling from a faint murmur into a deafening wall of sound that vibrated through the glass of the bedroom windows. Red and blue strobe lights painted the high ceilings in frantic, flashing strokes, casting eerie shadows across the ruined bedroom.

Alora was still curled on the floor, weeping softly, her body racked with nervous tremors.

I bypassed my mother and sister entirely, dropping to my knees beside my wife. I gently slid my arms around her shoulders, lifting her away from the broken glass and debris, pulling her trembling form securely against my chest.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart,” I murmured, pressing my lips to her forehead, my voice thick with emotion. “You’re safe now. The nightmare is over.”

“Thane... they... they were going to take everything,” Alora sobbed into my shirt, clutching my jacket with white-knuckled desperation. “Your mother said... she said you didn't love us... she said she was going to ruin us...”

“I know, baby. I saw everything,” I whispered into her hair, before gently laying her back down against a pile of plush pillows away from the chaos.

When I stood up and turned around, the front door downstairs had already been breached. Heavy combat boots pounded up the staircase, and shouting voices echoed through the hall.

“Police! Show your hands! Stay where you are!”

Three armed police officers rushed into the master suite, weapons drawn, scanning the room for active threats. Their tactical flashlights cut through the dim light, sweeping across the shattered wall safe, the overflowing designer suitcase filled with deeds and jewelry, and my mother and sister standing frozen like deer caught in headlights.

“Drop to your knees! Interlock your fingers behind your heads right now!” the lead officer barked, his voice commanding and absolute.

Sloan let out a shrill, hysterical shriek and dropped to her knees, bursting into loud, theatrical tears. “This is a mistake! You don't understand! We are family! He’s framing us! It was a misunderstanding!”

Corrine, realizing her lifelong career of manipulation was crashing down around her, threw her hands up defensively, her face flushed with furious indignation. “Officer, listen to me! My son is out of his mind! We were just trying to help him organize his assets! That woman on the floor is a manipulative gold-digger who tried to rob him, and we caught her red-handed!”

The officers didn't blink. They moved with mechanical efficiency, slapping steel handcuffs onto both women with sharp, definitive clicks.

As Sloan was hauled to her feet, screaming obscenities and cursing my name, and Corrine was escorted out in cold silence, the lead detective walked up to me, pulling out his notepad.

“Mr. Sterling? You placed the 911 call reporting a burglary and assault in progress?”

“I did,” I replied steadily, pulling out my phone and tapping the screen. “And I have every second of it recorded in 4K high-definition. Audio, video, and biometric intent. Here is the direct cloud link to the entire file.”

The detective took my phone, plugged his credentials into the transfer prompt, and watched the first thirty seconds of the footage. As the video played out the brutal reality of my mother’s cruelty and my sister’s greed, the hardened detective’s jaw tightened into a hard line. He looked up at me with profound disgust.

“Well, Mr. Sterling,” the detective said grimly, handing my phone back. “You won't need to worry about pressing charges tomorrow morning. We have enough here for felony armed burglary, aggravated assault, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit fraud. They aren't walking out of holding for a very long time.”
