Chapter 9 - The Reclaiming of the Hearth

Marcus fell backward onto his velvet throne, his legs giving out entirely beneath him. He looked at his father lying broken on the floor, and then up at Aurora as she walked slowly up the steps of the dais, her footsteps leaving charred, glowing footprints in the marble.

"Please..." Marcus whimpered, tears streaming down his face as he pressed himself back against the wall. "Don't kill me, Anna. I'm your brother. We share the same blood."

Aurora stopped right in front of him, looking down at the boy who had stolen her childhood, her health, and her family name.

"We did share blood," Aurora said softly, raising her right hand and placing her glowing fingertips gently against the center of Marcus’s chest. "And now, I am simply taking back what is mine."

Marcus opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out.

A blinding column of white-gold light erupted from his chest, connecting his body to Aurora’s palm. The stolen essence—the artificial, unstable shard of the Primordial Flame that Valen had grafted into Marcus’s core eighteen years ago—was violently ripped out of his meridian system, streaming back into Aurora’s body like a river returning to the sea.

Marcus collapsed into a boneless heap on the dais, his skin turning grey, his breathing stopping permanently as his stolen life-force was reclaimed by its true master.

The ballroom was dead silent. The surviving nobles and guards stood frozen in terror, none daring to breathe, let alone raise a weapon against the new god of Oakhaven.

Aurora lowered her hand. The golden light in her eyes flared brighter than ever before, stabilizing into a permanent, majestic radiance. The flame within her wasn't a curse anymore—it was a kingdom.

She turned around, looking out over the shattered remains of the Ignia estate, and then down through the vaulted glass ceiling toward the dark, smog-choked slums far below where Elias was resting.

She had started her journey in the mud, bleeding and nameless.

Now, the ashes of the old world were settling at her feet, and a new empire was about to be born.
