Chapter 3 - The Dockside Ambush

The door exploded into a shower of jagged splinters. Aurora rolled across the dirt floor, coming up in a crouch with her steel blade gleaming in the faint candle glow.
Through the ruined doorway, two figures stepped out of the heavy river fog. They didn't look like local enforcers or street thugs. They wore high-collared coats of midnight-blue velvet embroidered with the blazing sun-and-sword crest of the Ignia household—the elite inquisitorial guard known as the Sun-Wardens.
At their head stood Commander Kellan Vance, a man whose face looked as though it had been carved from white marble, cold and utterly devoid of human pity. A silver rapier hung at his hip, its pommel embedded with a pulsing solar crystal.
Kellan’s sharp eyes swept the cramped, squalid room, instantly locking onto Aurora.
"Well, well," Kellan murmured, his voice smooth as silk sliding over glass. "The stray dog actually made a nest in this filth. Valen said you died of a blood-fever eighteen years ago. But the resonance tracker doesn't lie. The leftover residue of the Primordial Flame sings in your veins like a beacon."
"Tell Valen his tracking skills are as rusted as this shack," Aurora retorted, her voice dripping with venom. She took a slow step backward toward the rear escape hatch that led down to the drainage tunnels.
"You think you have somewhere to run?" Kellan smiled coldly, making a slight hand gesture.
Behind him, two more wardens dropped from the rotting roof beams, blocking the rear exit with drawn stun-batons crackling with blue electrical current.
"We aren't here to kill you, Anna," Kellan said, using her dead, forgotten name like a dirty word. "Master Marcus’s core is destabilizing. The flame is rejecting his artificial vessel. Your father needs his spare parts back. Alive, if possible. But we aren't terribly strict about the 'alive' part of the requisition form."
Aurora didn't hesitate.
Instead of retreating, she lunged forward with blinding, unnatural speed. The golden ember within her chest surged, flooding her muscles with a sudden, intoxicating rush of raw, kinetic power. She wasn't human anymore—not entirely.
Before Kellan could draw his rapier, Aurora closed the distance, ducking beneath the swing of the nearest warden’s electric baton. She drove her heel into the guard’s knee joint with a sickening crunch, snatching his baton from his hand before he even hit the floor.
"Catch!" she shouted, swinging the crackling baton directly into the second warden’s chest.
A shower of blue sparks erupted as the electrical charge discharged against his armored breastplate, sending the man flying backward through the ruined doorway.
Kellan’s eyes widened in genuine shock. "You... you retained the core resonance? That’s impossible! Your father drained your primary meridian!"
"My father is an idiot," Aurora snarled, spinning around to face the commander. "And so are you."

She didn't wait to chat. She dove straight through the open window frame, shattering the glass and plunging headfirst into the muddy, labyrinthine alleys of the lower docks as the Sun-Wardens opened fire with volatile plasma pistols behind her.
