Chapter 5 - The Awakening of the Core

The underground laboratory smelled of sulfur, distilled moonflower, and ancient parchment. For three days, Silas put Aurora through a crucible of physical and spiritual agony.
She sat cross-legged inside a massive, rune-carved copper circle set into the stone floor, while Silas poured concentrated vials of elemental essence over her head. Every drop of solution burned like liquid fire, forcing the dormant Ignia bloodline markers in her marrow to wake up, scream, and unite.
"Breathe, Anna!" Silas commanded, his voice cutting through the roaring sound in her ears. "Do not let the fire consume your mind! You are the master of the hearth, not the fuel!"
Aurora’s teeth were clenched so hard she could taste copper. Visions flashed behind her eyelids—memories that weren't hers, and memories she had buried. She saw the grand, marble-pillared halls of the Ignia estate; she saw her mother’s tear-stained face leaning over her crib; and she saw Marcus—plump, pampered, and smiling—drinking from the golden chalice filled with her own six-year-old blood.
*Anger.*
It wasn't a blind, childish rage anymore. It was cold, focused, and heavy as a mountain.
She inhaled deeply. The golden ember in her chest expanded, rushing outward along her veins, igniting every nerve ending with blinding white light.
*BOOM!*
A shockwave of pure thermal energy blasted outward from the copper circle, shattering every glass beaker on Silas’s workbench and blowing the heavy iron laboratory door off its hinges.
Aurora opened her eyes.
They weren't brown anymore. They burned with a brilliant, molten gold hue, ringed by a halo of white fire. When she exhaled, actual wisps of smoke curled from her lips.
Silas shielded his face with his sleeve, staring at her in stunned reverence. "By the Ancestors... you didn't just retain your core. You evolved it. The stolen blood... it mutated under the pressure of the slums. You are carrying a pure, unblemished Primordial Flame."
Aurora stood up slowly. Her body felt light, as if gravity had lost its grip on her. She raised her right hand, curling her fingers into a fist. A sphere of crackling, white-gold plasma materialized instantly above her palm, casting a blinding radiance across the dark stone walls.
"Marcus is hosting a grand banquet tonight at the upper citadel," Aurora said, her voice echoing with a strange, double-toned resonance that sounded like multiple voices speaking as one. "Celebrating his successful 'ascension' to full patriarch-in-training."
Silas looked at her, his expression grim. "It's a trap, Anna. Valen knows you're alive. He used Marcus's illness as bait to draw you out of hiding."
Aurora extinguished the plasma sphere with a flick of her wrist, her golden eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

"Good," she whispered, pulling her dark cloak over her shoulders and sliding her steel blade into its forearm sheath. "I save them the trouble of sending invitations."
