Chapter 10 - The Sovereign of Embers

Three days after the fall of the Ignia household, the political landscape of Oakhaven had fundamentally shifted.
The high council of the upper district had formally dissolved the Ignia bloodline decree, transferring all property deeds, industrial holdings, and magical archives to a single, unassailable entity: Aurora, the Sovereign of the Hearth.
In the slums of the lower wards, the rusted tin shacks were being torn down, replaced by modern housing complexes funded by the newly established Ember Foundation. Clean water, warm hearths, and magical protection barriers—things once reserved exclusively for the elite—were now distributed freely to the impoverished laborers who had kept the city alive for generations.
Inside the sunlit master study of the former Ignia manor—now renamed the Sovereign Citadel—Aurora stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the horizon where the morning sun was rising through the clearing mist.
Master Silas sat in a plush velvet armchair nearby, sipping a cup of imported black tea.
"The eastern magistrate sent another petition this morning," Silas noted, not looking up from his parchment scrolls. "They want to know what your official policy will be regarding the border tariffs."
"Tell them the tariffs are abolished," Aurora replied smoothly, her voice carrying an effortless, commanding authority. "If trade flows freely between the upper and lower districts, everyone prospers."
Silas chuckled softly. "You sound less like a vengeful orphan and more like a true queen every day."
"I'm no queen, Silas," Aurora said, turning away from the window and walking over to the heavy oak desk.
She reached down, picking up a small, tarnished copper coin—the exact one she had carried in her pocket during her years in the slums, and before that, the coin Elias had given her on the day he saved her life.

She slipped the coin into her pocket, feeling the steady, powerful warmth of the Primordial Flame beating in rhythm with her heart.
"Queens rule over kingdoms," Aurora whispered, a confident, radiant smile touching her lips as she looked toward the open door where a new, unbroken future awaited her. "I am just finishing a fire that should have been lit eighteen years ago."
