Chapter 4 - The Midnight Flight

The Gulfstream G650 climbed steeply into the midnight sky over Rome, banking hard toward the North Atlantic.

Elena sat alone in the forward cabin, staring blankly out the window as the Mediterranean coastline dissolved into a vast, inking blackness. She hadn't waited for Marcus to return to the villa. She had left a brief, carefully worded note on the kitchen island—telling him she had to handle an urgent family matter regarding her own past in Boston, and begging him to trust her for just twenty-four hours.

She knew Marcus would be furious. By now, he would have read her note, checked her flight logs, and realized she had flown across an ocean alone. His protective instincts—the same fierce, dominant instincts that made him a titan in the corporate world—would be screaming for answers.

*Vrrr-vrrr.*

Her satellite phone began to buzz insistently on the small side table. She ignored it. It buzzed again. And again.

Finally, she picked it up, swiping the screen to accept the secure video call.

Marcus’s face materialized on the high-definition display. He was sitting in the private study of the Roman villa, the dark mahogany panels framing his broad shoulders, his steel-gray eyes burning with a mixture of intense worry and simmering fury.

"Have you lost your mind?" Marcus demanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl. "You board a transatlantic flight in the middle of the night without a word to me? After everything that just happened on that plane—after men tried to hunt down a teenager in our airspace—you decide to vanish into thin air?"

"I had to, Marcus," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly, though she forced herself to look directly into the camera lens.

"Had to?" Marcus slammed his hand down on the desk, the sharp sound echoing through the cabin. "Elena, talk to me! What is happening? When my security team checked your departure logs, they found you accessed the restricted archive in Rome. What are you looking for?"

Elena closed her eyes for a brief, agonizing second. The temptation to confess everything right then and there—to scream through the screen that his father was a monster who stole their child—hung heavily on her tongue. But she knew a digital screen across six miles of atmosphere was no place for a truth this heavy.

"Marcus, listen to me," she said, her voice softening, carrying a profound, heartbreaking vulnerability. "Trust me. Just for twenty-four hours. Stay in Rome. Protect Maya. When I find what I'm looking for in Boston, I will come back, and I will tell you everything. Every single detail."

Marcus went completely still. The anger in his eyes flickered, replaced by a deep, aching concern. He knew that look on his wife’s face; it was the look of a woman fighting a war he wasn't yet permitted to see.

"Is it about the baby?" Marcus asked quietly, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The baby we lost twenty-four years ago? El... I found the medical ledger in my father’s vault tonight. The numbers don't add up."

Elena’s heart stopped. "You found it?"

"I found it," Marcus said, his jaw tightening. "And I swear to God, if my father had anything to do with—"

"Stay in Rome, Marcus," Elena interrupted fiercely, cutting him off before he could voice the terrifying suspicion that was eating them both alive. "Don't dig into those files alone. Wait for me."

She tapped the disconnect button before he could reply, plunging the cabin back into silence.
