Chapter 10 - The Unwritten Chapter

The golden afternoon sunlight streamed through the French doors of the Roman villa, casting a warm, amber glow across the manicured gardens outside.
On the stone patio, Mateo was teaching Maya how to knead a small ball of pizza dough, their shared laughter floating on the gentle breeze.
Elena stood by the railing, watching the scene unfold with a cup of coffee in her hand. Footsteps approached softly from behind, and a familiar, warm cashmere jacket draped over her shoulders.
Marcus wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder as he looked out over the gardens.
"Penny for your thoughts," Marcus whispered against her ear.
Elena smiled, leaning back into his embrace. "I was just thinking about how fragile life is, Marcus. How one secret, buried deep enough, can nearly destroy generations."
"And yet," Marcus murmured, kissing her cheek, "truth has a way of rising to the surface, no matter how heavy the stones you pile on top of it."
"Yes," Elena agreed softly, turning in his arms to look up into his steel-gray eyes, which were now completely free of the cold armor they had worn for decades. "And this time, we write the ending ourselves."

From across the garden, Lily called out, waving a flour-covered hand in the air and shouting for her parents to come join them.
Elena laughed—a bright, unburdened sound that echoed across the courtyard—and took Marcus’s hand, walking together into the sunlight to embrace the family they had fought so hard to reclaim.
