Chapter 3 - The Cipher of Inheritance

Back at the private villa overlooking the Roman hills, the Mediterranean breeze did nothing to cool the feverish heat inside Elena’s head.
The villa was quiet. Marcus was still at the executive suite working with his security detail, tying up the loose ends of the mid-air kidnapping attempt orchestrated by the loan sharks. But Elena knew that crisis was merely a ripple compared to the tidal wave about to hit.
She sat at her mahogany desk, the classified dossier spread open beneath the harsh glare of a brass reading lamp.
Document 41-B: The Transfer of Wardrobe and Identity.
Date: October 14, 2006.
Recipient Family: Robert and Evelyn Hayes (Deceased, 2018).
Assigned Alias: Lily Hayes.
Current Status: Unconfirmed living location within the Northeast United States academic network.
Elena traced the name Lily Hayes with her fingertip. For twenty-four years, she had mourned a ghost. Now, the ghost had a name, a university degree, a life, and a heartbeat somewhere out in the world. But tracking her down through official channels was impossible; the Vance family security algorithms had scrubbed every public database clean.
*Vrrr-vrrr.*
The secure satellite phone on her desk vibrated violently.
Elena snatched it up, pressing the answer key. "Talk to me."
"Mrs. Vance," Marcus’s deep, steady voice came through the encrypted line. There was a subtle exhaustion in his tone that she hadn't heard in years. "The federal marshals have secured the extradition orders for the men who boarded the flight. They'll be locked away for a very long time. Are you and Maya safe at the villa?"
"We're safe, Marcus," Elena said, her voice remaining carefully neutral, though her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Good. I'm finishing up a final conference call with the London board, and then I’ll be back at the villa within the hour," Marcus continued. "We need to talk, Elena. There are things... security matters regarding my father's old estate... that I need to share with you. Secrets he kept locked away in the corporate vaults."
Elena’s breath caught in her throat. Did Marcus find something? Did he already stumble upon the adoption manifest?
"What kind of secrets, Marcus?" she asked, keeping her tone meticulously even.
"Files that my father left behind before he died," Marcus replied, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. "Financial trails leading to mysterious trusts set up in nineteen-prime... trusts that don't match any known corporate subsidiaries. It’s... complicated, El. When I get home, we'll open the vault together."
"Alright," Elena whispered. "Hurry back."
She disconnected the call and stared at the phone. Time was running out. If Marcus opened those vaults and found the adoption files before she could explain the full context—before she could prepare him for the devastating reality that his own father had kidnapped their newborn child—the shock could shatter him. Or worse, it could drive him into a blind, vengeful rage that would put innocent people in the crossfire.
She had to find Lily first.
She pulled her laptop toward her, bypassed the standard firewall using a high-level administrative override key she had stolen from Arthur Vance's personal safe years ago, and typed in the alias: Lily Hayes.
Suddenly, the screen flickered. A line of encrypted data popped up, showing a recent financial transaction processed through a boutique bookstore in downtown Boston—a transaction linked to a loyalty card bearing the name Lily Hayes.

Elena’s breath hitched. She wasn't in New York. She was right back where the nightmare started. Boston.
