Chapter 4 - Sweeping Away the Debris

By midnight, the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers and forensic vans illuminated the grand estate driveway, casting long, dancing shadows across the manicured lawns. The ballroom had been cleared of terrified wedding guests, replaced by crime scene investigators, fingerprint technicians, and detectives in dark suits collecting evidence.

Portia was escorted out the front doors in heavy steel handcuffs, her designer wedding gown dragging disgracefully across the gravel as media flashbulbs popped furiously in the dark night air. She offered no resistance, her head bowed in utter humiliation as she was pushed into the back of a black-and-white squad car.

Inside the mansion, the heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had choked the halls for two decades was finally gone.

Flora and Cedric worked together near the grand wedding table, carefully sweeping up the remaining fragments of the shattered blue-and-white porcelain vase into a velvet pouch. Though the antique was broken beyond repair, nobody mourned its loss. In a strange twist of fate, the accident had shattered the illusion that kept the family imprisoned in silence.

Alonzo walked into the room carrying a warm cup of cocoa, gently handing it down to little Maisie, who was curled up comfortably on a plush sofa, her tears completely dried.

“How are you feeling, champ?” Alonzo asked softly, sitting on the edge of the cushion.

Maisie took a small sip of the cocoa and smiled up at him. “My cheek doesn't hurt anymore, Alonzo. And... the bad lady is gone, right?”

“She’s gone for good,” Alonzo promised, his voice filled with a fierce, protective warmth. “And nobody will ever lay a hand on you in this house again.”

Cedric walked over, placing Lady Eleanor’s recovered letter safely inside a leather briefcase before snapping it shut. He looked at Alonzo, his eyes shining with a mixture of profound sorrow and long-awaited peace. “We finally brought her home, Alonzo. Your mother’s soul can finally rest.”

Alonzo nodded slowly, looking around the bright, wide-open spaces of the estate. The ghosts of the past had finally been exorcised, cleared away just like the broken shards of porcelain on the floor.
