Chapter 2 - The Wax Seal of the Past**

The silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute that the distant hum of the estate’s ventilation system sounded like a roaring wind. Alonzo held the envelope up to the amber light of the chandelier, his thumb tracing the brittle edges of the vintage paper. The wax seal stamped on the back was an emblem belonging exclusively to the Vance family estate—a seal that hadn't been used in over two decades, not since the tragic, unsolved disappearance of Lady Eleanor Vance, the true matriarch of the household.
Portia slowly picked herself up from the wedding chair, her legs shaking violently beneath her custom silk gown. Her manicured fingers hovered near her bruised cheek, but her wide, terrified eyes were glued entirely to the envelope. She knew what was inside. She knew that single piece of parchment contained the blueprint of her entire life's deception—a confession written in ink that could never be washed away.
“Open it, Alonzo,” Cedric urged, stepping closer, his voice laced with a mixture of dread and long-suppressed grief. “If that’s Eleanor’s handwriting, the world needs to know what happened to her before she vanished into thin air.”
Portia let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh that grated against the quiet room. “Don’t listen to him! It’s a forgery! It’s an old prank designed to ruin my wedding night! Alonzo, give me that letter right now, or I swear you’ll regret—”
“Shut your mouth, Portia,” Alonzo cut her off with a single, devastating glare that froze the words in her throat. He didn't blink as he broke the dried wax seal with his thumb, sliding out a folded, multi-page letter written in frantic, hurried strokes.
As Alonzo’s eyes scanned the first few lines, the color drained from his own face. His breathing grew shallow, and his powerful shoulders tensed. The document wasn't just a personal note; it was a signed, witnessed deposition detailing how Portia—then a trusted estate nurse—had systematically poisoned Lady Eleanor’s daily medication, staged her disappearance, and forged the legal documents that allowed Portia to inherit the estate and marry into the family wealth.
Little Maisie, standing safely behind Alonzo’s legs, peeked out at the unfolding drama, sensing the heavy, dark shift in the room. Flora knelt back down to comfort the child, keeping a watchful eye on Portia’s frantic movements.
“Look at the date,” Cedric breathed, reading over Alonzo’s shoulder. “It’s dated October 14th. The exact night Eleanor disappeared.”

Portia realized the game was entirely up. Her breathing hitched, turning into ragged gasps of panic. She looked left, then right, calculating her chances of sprinting past the two massive bodyguards blocking the double doors. But there was no escape. The trap had snapped shut with iron precision, and the glittering wedding celebration had transformed into a courtroom of reckoning.
