Chapter 1 - The Porcelain Shards and the Cruel Slap**

The antique blue-and-white porcelain vase had stood silently beside the grand wedding table all evening, a priceless heirloom gleaming under the crystal chandeliers—until little Maisie accidentally bumped her elbow against its heavy base. In a split second, the magnificent artifact toppled over, crashing violently onto the cold marble floor and shattering into a thousand jagged pieces. Before the echoes of the crash could even fade away, Portia reacted with blinding, terrifying speed. She lunged forward and slapped Maisie across the face with such vicious force that the little girl spun sideways and collapsed directly beside the glittering porcelain shards.

“You destroy everything you touch,” Portia hissed, her voice dripping with venom as she glared down at the sobbing child.

Alonzo had been deep in conversation with distinguished wedding guests only a few feet away when the commotion erupted. The absolute second he saw Maisie crumpled on the floor with a bright red handprint stinging across her pale cheek, his expression hardened into stone. He cut through the crowd like a freight train, crossed the ballroom in three long strides, lifted Maisie up into his arms, and pulled her safely behind him out of harm's way.

Down on the floor, Flora knelt amidst the debris, her hands carefully reaching out to gather the scattered porcelain pieces before someone cut themselves. That was precisely when something entirely unexpected slid out from the deep, dusty shadow beneath the mahogany display cabinet. It was a small, tightly sealed envelope, yellowed with age, bearing an intricate wax seal that had long since dried.

Portia’s eyes locked onto the white paper rectangle. In an instant, the broken antique vase—worth a small fortune—no longer seemed to matter at all. Her face contorted in sheer, unadulterated panic, and she lunged forward like a cornered animal toward Flora.

“Give me that envelope!” Portia screamed, her composure completely shattering as she reached desperately for Flora’s hands.

Before Portia’s fingertips could graze the paper, Alonzo’s hand shot out like lightning, grabbing her wrist with a crushing grip that stopped her dead in her tracks. Taking advantage of the brief distraction, Flora quickly scooped up the envelope and passed it directly to Alonzo. Across the long wedding table, Cedric stared intently at the sweeping, elegant cursive scrawled across the front of the paper, his breath catching in his throat as he slowly stood up from his chair.

Driven by frantic desperation, Portia made another wild, feral grab for the letter. This time, Alonzo didn’t just hold her back. With a cold, calculated fury, he released her wrist and struck her across the face with one powerful, open-handed slap. The force of the blow echoed like a gunshot through the silent hall, sending Portia stumbling backward until she crashed heavily into an empty wedding chair, gasping for air.

Cedric’s eyes never left the envelope resting in Alonzo’s hand. He took a slow step forward, his voice trembling as he read the faded ink from a distance.

“That’s your mother’s handwriting,” Cedric whispered.

Alonzo looked down at the mysterious paper, then turned his head slowly toward Portia, who was clutching her stinging cheek in utter disbelief. With a subtle nod from Alonzo, two massive bodyguards detached themselves from the shadows near the entrance and moved swiftly into position directly behind Portia’s chair.

The entire ballroom went dead silent, hundreds of elite guests holding their collective breath.

“You weren’t protecting the vase,” Alonzo said, his voice dropping into a chilling, dangerous register that silenced the room completely. “You were protecting this.”

Portia’s face lost every drop of color, turning a ghostly, sickly white. Because whatever was sealed inside that envelope was clearly the reason she had been desperate to keep anyone from looking beneath the vase—and the dark truth of her past was about to come crashing down upon her head.
