The following morning, Marcus Vance sat across from me in the penthouse study. The leather box containing my mother’s files rested on the mahogany desk between us.
Marcus finished reading the final page of the forensic report, looking up with a grim, solemn expression.
“This isn't just a corporate takeover anymore, Ms. Sterling,” Marcus said quietly. “This is first-degree murder, conspiracy, and financial fraud spanning over a decade. If I hand these files to the District Attorney, your father and Veronica will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.”
I looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline, feeling an overwhelming wave of cold, crystalline clarity wash over me. For ten years, I had lived in the shadow of their cruelty, mourning a mother whose death had been brushed off as tragic fate.
“Hand them over,” I said.
Within two hours, federal marshals and city police officers arrived at the modest rental home in Queens where Veronica and my father had taken temporary refuge.
Live news helicopters hovered over the suburban street as cameras captured the unbelievable spectacle: Arthur Sterling, once the untouchable titan of Wall Street, and his wife Veronica being led out in handcuffs, shielded by dark jackets, their heads bowed in total disgrace.
