Chapter 3 - The Panic Sets In

The silence in the ballroom was so absolute you could hear the ice melting in the abandoned champagne buckets.

My father dropped his glass. The crystal shattered against the Italian marble flooring, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot. He stared at Marcus, then turned his head slowly, his eyes landing on me. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

“You...” my father stammered, his face turning an unhealthy shade of pale purple. “You did this? You plotted behind my back? You’re just a kid!”

“I was a kid when you let Veronica and Chloe strip my mother’s legacy out from under me,” I said softly, stepping closer to him, my voice carrying an effortless, terrifying authority. “I was a kid when you forced me to sit at the end of the table like an unwanted guest. But today, Dad... I turned twenty.”

Veronica shoved her way through the paralyzed crowd, her designer dress swishing aggressively, her face twisted in rage. She pointed a manicured finger directly at my face.

“You ungrateful little bitch!” Veronica screamed, completely dropping her polished high-society persona as panic clawed through her veneer. “Arthur, do something! Call security! Have these men thrown out of the building! She’s fabricating documents! She’s mentally unstable!”

None of the security guards moved. They knew who paid the overarching corporate retainer—and it wasn't Arthur Sterling anymore.

“Step back, Mrs. Sterling,” one of the federal agents instructed firmly, stepping between Veronica and me, his hand resting calmly on his belt.

Chloe’s phone buzzed aggressively in her hand. Then another buzz. And another. Within seconds, the phones of half the socialites standing near the front of the room began lighting up with notifications. Whispers erupted like wildfire.

“Oh my god... look at financial news...”

“Sterling Holdings stock just hit a circuit breaker...”

“All company credit lines have been frozen? Wait, look at the SEC filing—”

Chloe checked her screen, her eyes widening in horror as the banking app notifications scrolled past a dozen blocked transactions. Her corporate platinum card—the one she had used to fund her lavish shopping sprees, private jets, and VIP tables just hours ago—had been declined.

“No,” Chloe breathed, shaking her head in denial. “No, this is a mistake! My card has an unlimited limit! Dad, tell them to fix this!”

My father looked entirely defeated, his shoulders slumping as he realized the magnitude of what had happened. He hadn't read the fine print of his late wife’s will in twenty years. He had assumed the clause about the twentieth birthday was just a formality, a harmless date on a dusty piece of parchment.

He had forgotten that the woman who built Sterling Holdings hadn't left her empire to a man who sold out his family for a trophy wife. She had left it to her daughter.

And her daughter was finally collecting.
