Chapter 7 - The Desperate Move

Three days after the boardroom takeover, the story had officially broken across financial news networks and tabloid front pages alike: “The Sterling Succession: How a Twenty-Year-Old Heiress Reclaimed an Empire Overnight.”

Public opinion was split, but the corporate world was terrified. For years, investors had suspected that Sterling Holdings was bloated and mismanaged by Arthur Sterling’s inner circle. My swift, ruthless purge of corrupt executives signaled to Wall Street that a new, unyielding sheriff was in charge. Stock prices actually surged by four percent within forty-eight hours.

Up in the penthouse, however, the fallout was far less civilized.

I was reviewing subsidiary logistics reports in the private study when the heavy oak door banged open without warning.

Chloe stood in the doorway. She looked nothing like the polished socialite who had mocked me at my birthday party. Her designer hair was messy, her makeup was smeared, and she was wearing an oversized trench coat over wrinkled clothes. She looked deranged, driven by pure, unadulterated fury.

“You think you’re so smart, don't you?” Chloe snarled, storming across the room toward my desk.

Two private security guards materialized instantly from the hallway, grabbing her by the arms before she could reach me.

“Let me go, you idiots!” Chloe screeched, thrashing against them. She glared at me, her eyes wild. “You stole my life! You stole my clothes, my friends, my status! Everyone is laughing at us! Mother is having a complete breakdown in a cheap motel in Queens because you froze all our personal accounts!”

I didn't look up from my tablet immediately. I finished typing a sentence, then slowly raised my gaze to meet hers.

“Your mother spent five years looting accounts that didn't belong to her, Chloe,” I said quietly. “She’s lucky she’s in a motel in Queens and not a federal holding cell in Brooklyn.”

“I’ll destroy you,” Chloe spat, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper as she glared across the desk. “I have contacts. I know people who would love to see a arrogant little brat like you brought down a peg. You won't last a month at the top.”

I stood up slowly, walking around the desk until I stood just inches away from her. The height difference was negligible, but the power dynamic was absolute.

“Contacts?” I asked softly. “You mean the socialite party boys and superficial influencers who wouldn't even return your phone calls yesterday once your credit cards were declined? Try calling them, Chloe. See how many of them answer.”

Chloe’s expression flickered, the cruel reality of her social isolation hitting her harder than any legal document ever could. Her wealthy friends had already vanished like smoke in the wind.

“Take her out,” I instructed the guards calmly.

May you like

“You’ll regret this!” Chloe screamed as they dragged her backward out of the study, her voice echoing down the hallway until the heavy doors sealed shut.
