Chapter 3 - The Apex Predator

In the VIP mezzanine overlooking the floor, Nick Salvatore swirled his Scotch without looking at it.

Nick was a man who lived in the dark machinery of the city—shipping ports, private security contracts, and the quiet enforcement of underworld debts that politicians preferred to pretend didn't exist. He had cold, slate-grey eyes that missed nothing and a reputation for ruthless efficiency that kept his rivals permanently on edge.

He hadn't come to The Vault for entertainment. He was here to meet an informant who was late.

Then the spotlight shifted.

Nick’s gaze drifted lazily toward the stage, expecting the usual performance of wealthy socialites playing at rebellion. Instead, his eyes locked onto the woman standing inside the iron ring.

Her hair was jet-black, pulled back into a severe, professional knot that was slowly coming undone. Her hands were slightly trembling, but there was an electric, haunted intensity in her face that cut straight through the smoky haze of the room.

*A surgeon,* Nick diagnosed instantly, his sharp eyes noticing the subtle, rhythmic twitch of her left index finger—the classic tic of a microsurgeon under unbearable stress.

As Mia moved, shedding the tight constraints of her wool jacket, a low murmur rippled through the banquettes near the stage. Two men in expensive bespoke suits near the front pushed themselves upright, their body language shifting from appreciative spectators to something predatory.

Nick set his glass down on the mahogany table with a sharp clack.

Down on the stage, Mia had closed her eyes, letting the music vibrate through the wooden floorboards. She was halfway through a slow, hesitant rotation when one of the men from the front row—Victor Vance, a mid-level loanshark tied to the syndicate's eastern branch—stood up, vaulted over the low railing, and reached out to grab her wrist.

"Let's see what else the good doctor is hiding," Victor snarled, lunging forward with a drunken, aggressive grin.

Mia gasped, stumbling backward against the iron scrollwork, her hands flying up defensively.

Before Victor’s fingers could graze her skin, the room’s atmosphere shifted from heavy velvet to absolute, razor-sharp ice.
