Chapter 2 - The Velvet Cage

The air inside The Vault tasted of aged bourbon, expensive perfume, and ozone.

Mia stood at the base of the staircase, her chest tightening as the heavy oak door clicked shut behind her. The cavernous subterranean room was bathed in amber and deep crimson light. Wealthy patrons in tailored suits and half-mask disguises sat along velvet banquettes, sipping drinks and watching the center of the room.

In the middle of the floor stood an elevated circular stage enclosed by a ring of wrought-iron Victorian scrolling.

"First time?"

Mia jumped, turning sharply to see a tall woman in a midnight-blue silk dress and a silver Venetian mask leaning against the marble bar.

"I... yes," Mia admitted, her fingers clutching the strap of her handbag with white-knuckled intensity.

"Take a breath, darling," the woman said, swirling a glass of amber liquid. "Whatever brought you down these stairs, leave it at the threshold. Up there, you aren't a doctor, a wife, or a victim. You're whatever you decide to be."

Mia looked toward the stage. A woman in a black lace dress was moving under the amber spotlight—not with frantic desperation, but with a terrifying, absolute freedom. She moved as if the space belonged entirely to her, owning every shadow, defying every expectation of how a woman of status was supposed to behave.

Something inside Mia twisted. A deep, long-buried ache of rebellion.

For thirty-two years, she had followed every rule. She studied until her eyes burned, she married the right man, she washed her hands until they bled, and what did she get? A husband walking away, a life dictated by fear, and a heart locked inside an airtight container.

"Next," a masked MC called out into the smoky lounge, his voice echoing over the low rumble of the jazz speakers. "For our open stage exhibition... Dr. M."

Mia froze. The alias she had given the registrar upstairs.

Before she could turn around and bolt back up the stairs, a pair of gentle yet firm hands guided her forward. The crowd parted. The amber spotlight shifted, catching her face, illuminating the stark terror and the reckless defiance burning in her green eyes.

She stepped onto the stage. The iron ring enclosed her.

For the first three seconds, the silence of the room felt deafening. Mia looked out into the crowd of masked faces, her OCD screaming at her to fix her hair, to straighten her clothes, to run back to safety.

Instead, with trembling fingers, Mia reached up and unbuttoned the top two buttons of her conservative blouse.
