Chapter 10 - The Unforgiven Line

"Mia?" David’s voice cracked, his face turning pale as he looked from the bleeding mob enforcer on the table to his wife standing beside a notorious mafia boss. "What... what the hell is going on here?"
The air in the room dropped ten degrees.
Nick slowly lowered his hand, stepping in front of Mia like a protective wall, his cold eyes locking onto David with chilling indifference.
"You must be the husband," Nick said smoothly, his voice a low, gravelly warning. "The one who didn't appreciate what he had."
"David, I can explain," Mia started, stepping past Nick, though her legs felt like lead.
"Explain what?!" David yelled, his voice echoing off the obsidian glass walls, the divorce papers slipping from his trembling fingers and fluttering down onto the floor near the pool of blood. "I came here to drop off the settlement papers because I thought you were working late at the hospital! Instead, I find you in a back-alley mafia den playing nurse to a criminal!"
Mia looked down at the divorce papers lying on the blood-stained carpet. A strange, liberating calm washed over her. For three years, she had worried about what David thought, what the hospital board thought, what society expected her to be.
She looked up, her green eyes clear, steady, and completely devoid of fear.
"You're right, David," Mia said, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "I was playing nurse. And for the first time in my life, I'm standing in a room where someone actually sees me for who I am."
David stared at her as if she were a stranger, shook his head in disgust, and turned around, storming down the stairs without another word.
The heavy oak door slammed shut behind him.
Mia stood in silence for a long moment, listening to the echoes fade away. Then she bent down, picked up the divorce papers, and without opening them, tossed them straight into the smoldering fireplace beside the bar.
She turned back to face Nick.
The mafia leader was watching her with a dark, intense hunger in his slate-grey eyes. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest.
"You just burned your old life to the ground, Doctor," Nick murmured, his fingers gently tangling into her hair, tilting her chin up toward his.

Mia looked up into his eyes, her heart racing—not with anxiety, but with the terrifying, exhilarating thrill of absolute freedom.
"Good," she whispered, her lips parting as his head lowered toward hers. "It was time for a clean cut."
