Chapter 5 - The Heir and the Punchline

Three weeks later, the autumn sun shone brilliantly over the sprawling gardens of Sterling Manor. The corporate scandal had already cycled through the news networks, resulting in Julian’s formal indictment, the recovery of all embezzled funds, and a triumphant restructuring of Sterling Global Holdings with Maya unanimously appointed as Co-Chairman alongside her grandfather.
On the stone patio overlooking the manicured rose bushes, Arthur sat comfortably in his leather armchair, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, sipping his afternoon tea.
Maya walked out through the French doors carrying a fresh tray of pastries, her expression relaxed, wearing a soft cashmere sweater instead of her usual corporate armor. She set the tray down on the iron table and pulled up a chair beside him.
"The SEC filings cleared this morning, Grandpa," Maya said softly, a genuine smile finally touching her lips. "Sterling Global is officially secure. And Julian’s legal team has already offered a full plea deal with zero contest."
Arthur chuckled, reaching out to pat her hand with his warm, calloused fingers. "I told you so, didn't I? Never underestimate an old man with a good memory and a healthy supply of stubbornness."
Maya rolled her eyes playfully, leaning back in her chair. "You also gave me a heart attack with that secret archive key. Why didn't you just tell me about Julian three years ago?"
"Where is the fun in that?" Arthur grinned, his blue eyes twinkling mischievously. "Besides, I needed to test your detective skills. You've been spending too much time in London drinking lukewarm tea."
He paused, clearing his throat dramatically and straightening his collar.
"Speaking of which," Arthur continued, leaning forward with an expectant look. "I have a brand-new joke for you. I guarantee this one will make you laugh."
Maya raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms with a mock-serious expression. "Try me, Grandpa. But if it involves a horse, a priest, or a talking dog, I am walking back inside."
Arthur feigned profound offense, placing a hand dramatically over his heart. "Alright, tough crowd. Tough crowd. Let's try this one: Why don't scientists trust atoms?"
Maya stared at him for a beat, her lips twitching slightly despite her best efforts to remain stern. "Why?"
"Because they make up everything!" Arthur bellowed with laughter, slapping his knee as the warm autumn wind rustled the leaves around them.
Maya let out a short, genuine laugh—the first completely relaxed, unburdened laugh she had shared in years. She shook her head, looking out over the magnificent estate that her family had fought so hard to protect.

"Terrible, Grandpa," Maya smiled, reaching out to clink her teacup against his. "Absolutely terrible."
Arthur just grinned wider, taking another sip of his tea, knowing that as long as they stood together, no joke—and no enemy—would ever break their empire again.
