Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush

The twenty-fifth-floor boardroom of Sterling Global Holdings was bathed in the harsh, overcast light of a Connecticut morning. Massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooked the sprawling Manhattan skyline in the distance, but inside the room, the atmosphere felt like a courtroom waiting for a death sentence.
Twelve members of the board of directors sat around the polished black granite table, murmuring anxiously among themselves.
At the head of the table sat Julian Sterling, looking every bit the confident, magnanimous corporate savior. He wore a crisp navy suit, resting his hands casually on the armrests, playing the part of the grieving, dutiful relative forced to take control due to a patriarch's sudden medical incapacity.
To his left sat Arthur Sterling.
The old man looked frail in his wheelchair, blankets draped over his knees, his chin tucked down toward his chest. But if anyone looked closely into Arthur’s eyes, they would have seen that the fire was far from extinguished.
The heavy mahogany doors swung open, and Maya strode into the boardroom.
She wore a sharp, blood-red pantsuit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe ponytail. Every step she took echoed with absolute, unyielding authority. She didn't look like a woman facing federal fraud charges; she looked like an apex predator returning to her territory.
Julian’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second as she walked past him, pulling out the chair directly opposite his own.
"Good morning, members of the board," Julian began smoothly, clearing his throat and projecting his voice to command the room. "As you are all aware, we are gathered under unfortunate circumstances. Due to declining cognitive health and medical instability documented by Dr. Evans, our chairman, Arthur Sterling, is no longer capable of executing his fiduciary responsibilities."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through several older board members who had been quietly bought out by Julian’s shell companies over the previous year.
Julian continued, leaning forward with feigned sorrow. "Furthermore, pending federal inquiries into financial discrepancies within our London branch—led currently by Miss Maya Sterling—we must act swiftly to protect the integrity of this institution. I move that we invoke Article 9 of the corporate charter to strip Arthur of his voting shares and temporarily suspend Maya from her executive duties pending investigation."
He looked around the table, a triumphant glint in his eyes. "All in favor?"
Several hands began to rise around the table.
"I wouldn't be too hasty with your vote, cousin," Maya’s voice cut through the silence like a gunshot.
Julian froze. He turned to look at her, forcing a patronizing smile. "Maya, darling, I know this is difficult for you to accept, but the evidence—"
"The evidence," Maya interrupted, standing up slowly from her chair, "is quite fascinating."
She reached into her sleek leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of printed documents, and tossed them across the black granite table directly in front of the lead independent board director, Thomas Vance.
"What is this?" Thomas asked, adjusting his reading glasses as he flipped open the top page.
"That," Maya said, her voice ringing clear and strong across the silent boardroom, "is a complete forensic audit of every offshore wire transfer executed by our Chief Operating Officer over the past thirty-six months. It details six million dollars in embezzled R&D capital, falsified adoption records concealing his biological lineage to convicted criminal Richard Vance, and a recorded conspiracy to commit corporate fraud."
Julian’s face drained of color instantly. The charming corporate savior facade shattered completely.
"Lies!" Julian shouted, jumping to his feet, slamming his palms onto the table. "She fabricated these documents out of desperation! She's trying to cover up her own federal investigation!"
"Am I?" Maya asked calmly. She tapped a button on her tablet.
Instantly, the massive projector screen behind the boardroom table flickered to life. Audio began to play through the high-end surround sound speakers.
*“...Once the board votes on the restructuring next week, I’ll have full voting control. I’ll push Arthur out, liquidate the European assets, and leave the old bastard with nothing...”*
Julian’s voice—clear, unmistakable, and utterly damning—echoed off the glass walls of the boardroom.
The entire room sat in stunned, breathless silence. Several board members who had raised their hands to vote against Arthur slowly lowered them, their expressions turning from sympathy for Julian to outright horror.

Julian stared up at the projector screen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. All the color had completely vanished from his cheeks.
