Chapter 2 - The Archives of Deception

The basement archives of Sterling Manor were rarely visited by anyone except the estate caretaker. Dust motes danced lazily in the beam of Maya’s flashlight as she descended the creaking wooden stairs, her heels clicking sharply against the damp concrete floor.

The revelation Arthur had dropped in the study still echoed inside her skull like a physical blow. Julian Sterling—her cousin, her closest childhood companion, and the current COO of Sterling Global Holdings—was a fraud? It sounded like the plot of a trashy paperback thriller, not reality.

Yet, as Maya reached the heavy iron-reinforced door at the end of the hall and inserted the tarnished silver key into the keyhole, her hands trembled slightly.

The lock turned with a heavy, satisfying mechanical click. She swung the massive steel door open, stepped inside the damp vault, and illuminated the rows of metal filing cabinets with her flashlight beam. It took her less than two minutes to locate drawer 4B, labeled CONFIDENTIAL - J.S. 2001.

Inside lay a thick manila folder tied with faded red ribbon.

Maya pulled it out, carried it over to the small wooden evaluation desk under the flickering overhead light, and untied the ribbon. She opened the cover, and the documents spilled out across the desk.

Her breath caught in her throat.

The top paper was an adoption certificate, but the names didn't match what the family had been told for two decades. Julian wasn't the biological son of Arthur’s late eldest son, Thomas. He was the child of a corporate embezzler named Richard Vance—the very man Arthur had successfully prosecuted and driven out of Wall Street in the late nineties.

Beneath the adoption papers lay a series of bank statements showing regular, massive wire transfers originating from offshore accounts controlled by Julian, funneling millions of dollars out of Sterling Global’s research and development subsidiaries into private shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.

And right at the bottom of the stack was a printed transcript of a private phone call recorded just three days ago.

Maya’s eyes raced across the text.

*“Don't worry about the old man,”* Julian’s cold, familiar voice read across the transcript. “He’s losing his grip. Once the board votes on the restructuring next week, I’ll have full voting control. I’ll push Arthur out, liquidate the European assets, and leave the old bastard with nothing.”

The paper slipped from Maya’s trembling fingers, floating down to land softly on the concrete floor.

A cold, paralyzing fury washed over her. All those years she had defended Julian in board meetings, covered for his strategic miscalculations, and trusted him as family—he had been a parasite slowly bleeding the Sterling empire dry from the inside out.

Suddenly, the heavy iron door of the archive vault groaned open.

Maya spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Standing in the doorway, blocking her only exit, was Julian Sterling himself. He wore an immaculate charcoal tailored suit, his golden-blond hair perfectly styled, but his face was completely devoid of its usual charming smile. Instead, a cold, predatory sneer twisted his lips.

"Well, well, well," Julian said smoothly, stepping into the vault and closing the heavy door behind him with a dull, echoing thud. "Looks like grandpa finally couldn't keep his mouth shut. I told him he should stick to his terrible jokes upstairs."

Maya forced her spine to straighten, banishing the shock from her face and replacing it with the icy composure of a seasoned executive. She slowly stood up from the desk.

"You're embezzling from the company, Julian," Maya said, her voice cutting through the damp air like a razor. "And you falsified your entire identity to infiltrate the board. How long did you think you could hide this?"

Julian chuckled softly, stepping closer, his loafers crunching against the dusty floor.

"Hide it, Maya? I'm not hiding anything anymore," Julian smiled coldly. "By tomorrow morning, the board will hold an emergency vote. Grandpa’s medical records—which I conveniently leaked to our medical board liaisons—prove he is mentally unfit to hold a voting share. And you? Well, you'll be too busy dealing with federal securities fraud charges to contest the restructuring."

Maya’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Check your corporate laptop, dear cousin," Julian laughed, pulling out his own phone and tapping the screen. "An anonymous tip was just filed with the SEC alleging that London branch accounts under your direct signature funneled six million dollars in undeclared capital gains. Federal agents are probably raiding your London flat right now."

May you like

Maya stared at him, the sheer scale of his betrayal finally dawning on her. He hadn't just stolen money; he had built an inescapable legal trap designed to destroy both her and Arthur in one fell swoop.
