Chapter 8 - Above the Storm

Inside the heated cabin of the helicopter, the roar of the rotors settled into a steady, rhythmic thrum as they soared high above the clouds, cutting through the dark Atlantic air toward a private airfield upstate.
Nina sat huddled in the leather seat, shivering slightly, her hands buried deep in the thick, wet fur around Ghost’s neck. The dog rested his massive chin heavily across her lap, his dark eyes half-closed in absolute contentment.
Lorenzo sat across from them, unbuttoning the soaked collar of his shirt and pulling the gold-plated micro-SD card from his pocket. He placed it carefully into a secure reader connected to his encrypted onboard tablet.
“What happens now?” Nina asked quietly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engines.
Lorenzo looked up from the screen, his amber eyes reflecting the soft blue glow of the display. Rows of encrypted financial ledgers, offshore routing numbers, and conspiratorial audio logs were already beginning to populate the monitor.
“Now,” Lorenzo said, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth, “we take everything Victor Vance owns, dismantle his syndicate piece by piece, and hand the authorities the exact blueprint of how your father’s name was dragged through the mud.”
Nina stared at him, a wave of profound, overwhelming relief washing over her chest for the first time in six years. The nightmare was finally ending.
Lorenzo reached across the aisle, extending his hand toward her. In his palm rested the heavy, studded leather collar—now stripped of its tactical hardware, leaving only a simple, battered band of leather.
“He’s yours, Miss Vasquez,” Lorenzo said softly. “He always was.”
Nina took the collar, her fingers tracing the worn leather where her father’s hands had once fitted it when Ghost was just a clumsy puppy. She slipped it gently back around the dog’s neck, fastening the buckle with a soft click.

Ghost let out a contented sigh, closing his eyes as his heavy tail gave a single, slow thump against the cabin floor.
