Chapter 3 - Secrets in the Leather Collar

The temperature in the study seemed to drop ten degrees.

Nina stood up abruptly, her chair scraping sharply against the hardwood floor. Ghost rose with her, his massive shoulders tensing, his eyes fixed on Lorenzo with sudden, renewed hostility.

“What are you talking about?” Nina demanded, her voice shaking slightly. “My father died in an accident. The police said his brakes failed on the Taconic Parkway.”

“Your father was investigating the exact network of offshore accounts my organization uses to clear capital through European ports,” Lorenzo said slowly, rounding the desk as he approached her. His face was a mask of cold, analytical focus. “And when he died, someone cleaned out his estate. They took his files, his laptop, and your dog.”

“That’s insane!” Nina shook her head, backing away a step until her legs hit the edge of the sofa. “Ghost was just a puppy! He didn't know anything about accounting or money laundering!”

“Dogs don't read spreadsheets, Miss Vasquez,” Lorenzo said, stopping just out of Ghost’s reach. His dark eyes dropped down to the thick, studded leather collar around the Rottweiler’s neck—the heavy, industrial-grade collar fitted with steel rivets and a military-spec GPS tracker that Lorenzo himself had installed three years ago. “But dogs can carry things. Or lead people to things.”

Ghost let out a low, warning growl, stepping directly between Nina and Lorenzo.

Lorenzo ignored the dog, his mind racing through years of encrypted transactions and missing intelligence files. “When my men bought him in Prague, the broker insisted the collar never come off. He claimed it was a specialized tactical training harness designed to monitor vital signs under combat conditions.”

Nina stared at the collar. She had been so overwhelmed by the shock of seeing Ghost alive that she hadn't looked closely at the hardware encircling his neck. Now, under the sharp light of the study, she saw the tiny, laser-etched serial numbers near the steel buckle—numbers that didn't belong to any pet store brand.

“It’s not a training harness,” Nina whispered, a terrifying realization dawning in her chest.

“No,” Lorenzo agreed quietly. “It’s a secure hardware vault. Encrypted micro-storage.”

Before either of them could move, the secure intercom on the desk blared with the sound of rapid, heavy gunfire echoing from the ground floor lobby far below.

Marcus’s voice screamed through the speaker, punctuated by shattering glass and screaming alarms: “Boss! We’ve been breached! Vance’s hit squad—they bypassed the lower security grid! They’re coming up the private elevator!”
